Strong finish sees Fermoy past Kilshannig and into JAFC semi-finals

FERMOY with a very good finish emerged winners over Kilshannig in the Synergy Fermoy Credit Union JAFC quarter-final at Mallow on Saturday evening. It was a game where both sides had their moments. Fermoy got off to a blistering start with four points in the opening 8 minutes by Brian O’Sullivan, Kieran Morrisson (2) and Martin Brennan. Kilshannig gradually got into the game and they also kicked four points on the trot courtesy of Frank McCarthy, Damian Murphy, Darragh O’Sullivan and Eanna O’Hanlon (free) 0-4 each after 18 minutes.

Fermoy hit the front again by impressive Kieran Morrisson Good play by Damian Murphy led to a great point by Colm O’Shea as the sides were level 0-5 each. Eanna O’Hanlon gave Kilshannig the lead after a poor kickout. Kieran Twomey followed with a pointed free. In the 25th minute Kilshannig’s Eanna O’Hanlon and Conor McMahon worked well for Dermot Twomey who placed Damian Murphy for a great point.

The only goal of the game came in the 26th minute when a foul on Garry O’Callaghan led to a quick free to Martin Brennan who goaled and levelled for the third time. Dermot Twomey with a great point edged the Glantane side ahead. In injury time Jack O’Callaghan kicked a great Fermoy point that tied up the scores at the break 1-6 to 0-9.

On the resumption Kilshannig dominated and three points by the 34th minute by Eanna O’Hanlon (free) Jack Twomey and O’Hanlon again after a four man attack had Kilshannig 0-13 to 1-6 clear after 36 minutes play. Fermoy forced a free that David Geary kicked but it hit the post. Cian O’Carroll pointed a Fermoy free with 15 minutes to go 0-13 to 1-7. Two points by Martin Brennan had the lead down to a point by the 47th minute. In the 50th minute a foul on Conor McMahon led to a pointed free by Eanna O’Hanlon. Kilshannig failed to score in the last 10 minutes and three minutes injury time.

In this period Fermoy did very well up front with their inside forwards very effective. Martin Brennan placed Kieran Morrisson for a point. In the 56th minute Cian O’Carroll pointed a ‘45’ that had the sides level for the fifth and last time 0-14 to 1-11. Kilshannig had two wides with Fermoy closing out the game with Kieran Morrisson pointing in injury time. They sealed their win when Adam Forde kicked a long range pointed free in the 63rd minute. The winners now meet Charlevill­e in the semi-final.
