Abbey Rovers are impressive quarter-final winners
Abbey Rovers 6-12 Araglin 1-8
ABBEY Rovers were comprehensive winners over Araglin in the JBFC(1) quarter-final at Doneraile on Friday evening.
From the start the winners gained control. Muiris Browne was outstanding at centre back with Shay Mullane and Mark O’Callaghan dominating in midfield. Up front their attack were in regular supply and despite scoring 6-12 they had some bad wides. Araglin lacked support up front with Aaron Hegarty very much on his own. Muiris Browne opened the scoring after good play by Shay Mullane and Mark O’Callaghan.
Araglin levelled in the fifth minute when Aaron Hegarty placed Dave Browne who pointed. Mark O’Callaghan soloed through and gave the winners the lead. In the ninth minute good play by Niall Hazelwood led to a well executed goal by Mark O’Callaghan. A minute late O’Callaghan worked well for Niall Hazelwood who goaled and made it 2-2 to 0-1.
Araglin goalkeeper Mark Hickey saved well from Dylan O’Connor. Aaron Hegarty and Muiris Browne swopped a point with Tom Norris working well for Paddy Kenneally who pointed for Araglin. Points were exchanged between Niall Hazelwood and Aaron Hegarty 2-5 to 0-4.
In the closing moments Abbey Rovers worked a good movement by Muiris Browne who linked up with Dylan O’Connor who goaled and had his side 3-5 to 0-4 clear at the interval.
The trend in the second half was much the same. Early points by Dylan O’Connor, Leon Farrell and Niall Hazelwood pushed the winners 3 -8 to 0-4 clear. Coming up to the end of the 3rd quarter Dylan O’Connor and Aaron Hegarty swopped a pointed free. Paddy Kenneally was denied a certain goal by a splendid save by John Batterberry. Goals by Muiris Browne and David Linehan pushed the Rovers 5-9 to 0-5 clear. Mark O’Callaghan soloed through and billowed the net in the 54th minute. Points by Dylan O’Connor (2) and Michael Ryan completed the winners tally. Araglin had three points by Aaron Hegarty, Cain O’Mahony and Mitch Barry.
In the 57th minute Araglin forced a penalty when Aaron Hegarty was brought down. The same player cooly dispatched the penalty to the net as Abbey Rovers advanced to a semi final meeting with Deel Rovers.
