Enterprising times ahead for Mallow Chamber

- BILL BROWNE

MALLOW has been short-listed in a prestigious nationwide competition that is bringing local businesses and community groups together in a bid to find Ireland’s most enterprising towns.

A panel of judges from the 2018 Bank of Ireland sponsored National Enterprise Town Awards will visit Mallow next Wednesday, when they will be give a presentation by Mallow Chamber at the GAA Complex in Carrigoon before being taken on a tour of the town.

Mallow, which was nominated for the competition by Cork County Council, is vying for top spot in the large town category for urban areas with a population of more than 10,000.

Chamber President Pat Hayes said he believed Mallow was more than capable of winning not just the regional and national titles but also the overall award, bagging a cool €33,000 in prize money along the way.

“To be nominated in itself was a major achievement and is recognition of the fact that so many people from across all sectors of the local community are regularly delivering innovative and exciting projects,” said Mr Hayes.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for Mallow to shine on the national stage and we have been working with local businesses and community groups over recent weeks to put together what we believe is a strong and compelling case for the judges,” he added.

Judging will take in a number of different headings including the extent and range of business activity, local enterprise initiatives, Mallow’s appearance and attractiveness, town leadership, inclusion and diversity, community support and its engagement with other towns across the region.

Mr Hayes said that he was confident that the panel would be impressed with the sheer depth and scope of business and community activity in Mallow and how different interest groups have come together on a wide variety of projects.

“It is that sense of togetherness and pride in our town that makes Mallow such a great place to live and work in,” said Mr Hayes.

“I have no doubt that the impressive presentation we have put together will highlight all that is great about Mallow and show the country how enterprise and community can work together to create a thriving and vibrant town,” he added.
