Celebrating Culture night across the County of Cork
PACKED PROGRAMME WILL CELEBRATE CORK’S RICH AND VIBRANT HERITAGE
AN exciting and eclectic programme of events will take place at venues across County Cork on Friday to mark Culture Night, the annual celebration of the our rich and vibrant cultural heritage.
Culture Night offers people a fantastic opportunity to be part of a magical evening of wonder and discovery that will once again highlight the astounding cultural wealth that abounds on our own doorstep.
Now in its eighth year, the initiative has been instrumental in inspiring individuals, groups and communities to shine the a spotlight on the fascinating cultural treasure trove that has made Ireland the envy of countries across the globe.
The public has been issued with an open invitation to become part of this free night of entertainment, adventure and discovery in the company of historians, musicians and artists.
Museums, galleries, churches, historic houses, artists studios and cultural centres across the county will throw open their doors until late into the evening, with people encouraged to wander in to venues, immerse themselves in our history and rekindle their love of all things Cork.
Best of all, the vast majority of events will be completely free of charge.
The Culture Night ambassador for County Cork, the Academy Award and Golden Globe-nominated creative director and co-founder of the Cartoon Salon, Nora Twomey, urged people to become part of “this wonderful, co-ordinated celebration of creativity”.
“Culture Night can help us find strength in each other’s creativity. Whatever you do, wherever you come from, however old or young you are, I hope you will join us,” she said.
On the night, Nora will share her own journey through animation and film when she introduces ‘25 Frames’, a documentary shot by young filmmakers mentored by the Cork Film Centre during the summer. This will be at 7pm in Mitchelstown’s Clongibbon House.
This will be just one of more than 100 events taking place across the county on the night, with venues in north and midCork featuring once again and leading the way.
From Mallow to Millstreet, from Blarney to Ballincollig, from Charleville to County Hall and venues in between, there will be a plethora of events to suit all ages and interests.
The village hall in Cúil Aodha will host a Céilí Mór from 7.30pm to 9pm for children attending local national schools, while the Bus Draíocht An Cultúr will take people on a magical bus ride from 4pm in Macroom, visiting local venues for events including poetry readings and song workshops.
The village square in Blarney will be the venue for the ‘Load of Blarney’ village trail, a historical walk around the area with re-enactments of famous local events.
The Town House in Doneraile will open its doors at 5.30pm for a guided tour with Myra Ryall, followed by poetry and drama in a marquee in front of Doneraile Court. The Charleville Writers Group will hold an open-mic event in the local library from 4pm, and the Millstreet Museum in Carnegie Hall will hold an illustrated talk on its rare exhibits from 5.45pm.
The Mallow area will be a hive of activity on the night, with events including a talk on Joan Denise Moriarty in the Aemilian Theatre from 7pm; an evening of song, music and storytelling from 7pm at the Old School Follogohig featuring Donie Nolan; and the screening of short films at the Gate Cinema from 6.30pm.
The Blackwater Studios in Glanworth will hold a love music podcast featuring some of the musicians that have recorded there over the years, The Thomas Kent Pipe Band will celebrate 60 years in existence with a performance at the Fermoy CMYS Hall from 7.45pm, and the Glen Theatre in Banteer will hold two one-act comedies penned by local writers.
