Bikers promote living in memory of departed Mick

- BILL BROWNE

LAST month hundreds of bikers from across Munster took to the roads of north and Mid- Cork to once again proving that some good can come from even the most tragic of situations.

On Saturday night organisers of the annual Mick O’Regan Memorial Run will gather in Buttevant to hand over the proceeds from this years event to Pieta House.

What started out as a tribute to a “fallen colleague” following the passing of popular motorbike enthusiast Mick O’Regan in 2012, has grown into a movement that has brought together bikers each year to raise badly need funds for the suicide and self-harm prevention centre.

One of Mick’s friends, Bertie O’Regan, said it was their way of remembering Mick’s life and wonderful personality.

“This is our way of paying tribute to a close friend and highly respected and liked member of the tightknit biking community in Cork. The fact that so many people turned out to support the run is testament to how much Mick meant to so many people,” said Bertie.

The cheque presentation will take place in Kit Roche’s bar at 9pm and will be followed by live music in the company of No Warranty and Brian Murray.

Bertie said the sixth annual run was the best so far, with more than 250 biking enthusiasts braving poor weather conditions to join the convoy as it made its way through Mallow, Blarney, Lissarda, Macroom, Kanturk, Charleville and all points in between before returning to Buttevant.

“The Friends of Mick O’Regan would like to thank all of the brave riders who turned up on the day for their donations, bucket collectors, the marshals who kept everyone safe and the Gardaí for their assistance on the say,” he said.

“We also thank from the bottom of our hearts all those who put money in the buckets along the way, Their wonderful generosity was greatly appreciated. The run is all about helping to prevent suicide and preserve life, so every cent counts.”

Bertie said all are welcome on Saturday night. “It promises to be a great night and we will be making a major announcement at the presentation, so come along and celebrate with us,” he said.
