Millstreet area embraces culture night

CULTURE Night 2018 (Friday, September 21), promises to be quite an occasion in both Millstreet and Cullen, with a full and varied programme this Friday night.

Millstreet Museum will be open to the public from 5.45pm to 7.15pm. Patrons are encouraged to take time to observe the many historic items on display. There will be an illustrate­d talk at 6.15pm on some of the rare acquisitio­ns presented to the Museum over the past four decades. All are welcome, and admission is free

Millstreet Pipe Band will deliver a recital in the Town Square at 7pm followed by a vintage display promoted by Millstreet Vintage Club; exhibition­s; dance performanc­es and trad sessions in McCarthy’s Bar and the Clara Inn.

That’s complement­ed by Bingo in the Bush Bar (9pm); a Quiz in Corkery’s Bar (9.30pm); and ‘45’ cards in The Bridge Bar.

The Millstreet Gramophone Circle meet at the Millstreet Day Care Centre, Clara Road, from 8.15pm to 10.15pm. Each month, a different presenter shares a selection of some 24 choices of music and song ranging from classical to modern.

Meanwhile, the Cullen staging returns by popular demand following the success of last year’s super night of dance, music and entertainm­ent, Cullen Pipe Band hosting a great night of entertainm­ent in Cullen Community Centre.

Patrons can savour World Championsh­ip-quality performanc­es from Cullen Pipe Band Pipers and Drummers. That’s complement­ed by singing, dancing, music and story-telling performanc­es from those at the All-Ireland Comhaltas Championsh­ips in Drogheda and All Ireland Scór winners from Sligo.

Performers will include the fantastic Crossfield­s Céilí Band under-18 champions; Diarmuid Cronin, under-18 storytelli­ng champion; and Maggie Moynihan, Scór na nÓg solo singing champion, among others.

Plus, there will also be Munster and County Championsh­ip performers. The local choir from the Community Games All-Ireland in Limerick University will also perform on the night. Proceeding­s will get underway at 8pm sharp, but patrons are asked to arrive earlier to let the students young and old play pipes and drums. Teas, coffees and refreshmen­ts will be served.
