Kildorrery bow out out city side Mayfield

Mayfield 1-14 Kildorrery 1-11

MAYFIELD with an injury time goal had a close win over Kildorrery on Saturday.

Both sides were evenly matched but the contributi­on of Paul Condon who finished with 1-11 was immense. Kildorrery opened with early points by James McEniry and Shane O’Neill (free).

Paul Condon opened with the winners first score in the eighth minute and he levelled from a free two minutes later. Good play by Paul Condon and Shane Donovan led to Condon taking the return pass and pointing.

Dean Grainger was denied by the post with Kieran Brosnan making a vital intercepti­on as Kildorrery pressed hard. James McEniry levelled after good play by Fintan Daly and Shane O’Neill.

Impressive David O’Neill cut through but was fouled with Paul Condon pointing the free. Condon added another point. Good work by Finbarr Stapleton led to a Tom Monaghan point.

A good movement involving Cormac O’Baoill and Shane O’Neill led to a fine save by David Hackett. Shane Kelly made a good run through the centre placing Paul Condon for a great point.

Coming up to half time Kildorrery battled back well. Shane Fitzgerald combined with Tom Monaghan who set up Jamie O’Gorman for a point. Colm Bond worked a good attack along with Alan Kelly and David O’Neill that led a point for Mayfield by Paul Condon.

In injury time a foul on Maurice Barry led to a pointed free by Paul Condon. Condon had Mayfield’s entire first half tally as they led 0- 8 to 0-6 at the break.

On the resumption Mayfield did well in defence and attack. Good play by Colm O’Neill, Paul Condon and Dean Grainger led to a fine point by Daniel Lucey. They moved further ahead when Shane Fitzgerald pointed.

Paul Condon followed with two pointed frees as the city side were double scores ahead after 38 minutes. Kildorrery came strong. Good play by Dylan Kent, Tom Monaghan and James O’Sullivan led to a vital block down by Padraigh Fitzgerald.

In the 39th minute Dylan Kent cut through from the centre and found Tom Monaghan who was fouled and a penalty awarded. Shane O’Neill goaled from the penalty and suddenly Kildorrery were back in contention. Good play by Tom Monaghan to Shane Fitzgerald led to a ‘45.

The ‘45 by Shane Fitzgerald was collected by Dylan Kent who kicked a fine point. Mayfield replied with a point when Colm Bond, Daniel Lucey and Maurice Barry set up Nicky Kelly who kicked over under pressure 0-13 to 1- 7.

By the end of the third quarter Kildorrery were within two points when Shane O’Neill pointed after a four man attack. Paul Condon (free) and Finbarr Stapleton exchanged a point with Tom Monaghan making a great run and he set up Finbarr Stapleton who pointed on the run.

In the 58th minute Kildorrery forced level when Richie McEniry kicked over under pressure. Extra time looked very likely. Both sides missed a chance. In the 62nd minute Mayfield won a vital ball in midfield that broke to Shane Fitzgerald who soloed through and parted to David O’Neill who worked along the flank finding Kevin Punch who passed to Paul Condon who scored the all important winning goal.
