Great second half sees Wolfe Tones through

Wolfe Tones 3-14 Buttevant 3-10

WOLFE Tones (Kanturk-Lismire) with a great second half had a four point win over Buttevant in the Rebel Og MAFC semi-final at Milford last Friday.

Buttevant got off to a perfect start and they opened with an early point by Gavin Carey. Ronan Coleman saved well from Mark Lenahan in the sixth minute.

Lenahan followed with a goal and two points and he also set up Mark O’Connell for a goal in the 10th minute as the Avondhu side led 2-3 to 0-0. Conor O’Donoghue opened Wolfe Tone’s account with a pointed free in the 1lth minute. Both sides exchanged points with Buttevant ahead 2-6 to 0-2 after 18 minutes.

The winners had a goal by Daniel O’Connell with Alan Walsh following with a point. In injury time Mark Lenahan had his second goal for Buttevant who led at the break 3-6 to 1-4.

Wolfe Tones came out a different side on the changeover. They took control in vital sectors. Both goalkeeper­s made some excellent saves.

Diarmuid Doody made a splendid save from Alan Walsh. The Duhallow side had eight scores on the trot. Daniel O’Connell had an early goal after good play by Tom Walsh. Seven points in succession had them 2-11 to 3- 6 clear by the 46th minute. Buttevant had to wait until the 47th minute for their opening score a point by Conor O’Hanlon.

Further Wolfe Tones pressure yielded points by Sam Houghton and Daniel O’Connell as they moved 2-13 to 3- 7 ahead.

Buttevant made a number of late attacks, they went in search of goals when good point scoring opportunit­ies prevailed. Conor O’Donoghue had a goal for the winners with Aaron McAuliffe having their last score a point. Gavin Carey and Mark Lenahan had late points for Buttevant.

Wolfe Tones held out for a final meeting with their neighbours and great rivals BK Plunkett’s.
