Mallow U-14 hurlers miss out on county final spot

BALLINCOLL­IG had four points to spare over Mallow in the Rebel Og County Premier (1) U-14 HC (Challenge Cup) semi-final at Mallow. This was a high scoring entertaini­ng game with the outcome in doubt up to the closing moments.

Ballincoll­ig took the lead with an early pointed free by James Dwyer. The same player was involved in the fourth minute when he put Tadhg O’Connell in for a goal. Mallow replied with a goal by Ronan O’Sullivan. Billy Kingston levelled with a pointed free in the eighth minute. Ballincoll­ig edged ahead with some good points.

Mallow’s Ronan O’Sullivan was denied a good goal scoring chance by Harry Kent who made a vital intercepti­on. Fionn Heffernan kept Mallow in touch with a pointed free. In the 15th minute Fionn Heffernan levelled at 1-3 each.

Good play by Trevor Erhabor led to a save by Ballincoll­ig keeper Niall O’Driscoll with Fionn Heffernan on hand to goal from the rebound 2-3 to 1-3. Both sides exchanged points with the teams level for the 4th time at 2-6 to 1-9 at the interval.

Mallow edged in front on the resumption with a point by Ronan O’Sullivan after good play by Declan Copse. James Dwyer levelled from a free. Both sides exchanged a pointed free as they were deadlocked 1- 11 to 2- 8.

Mallow took the lead again with points by Mark Kelleher and Fionn Heffernan. By the 4lst minute two pointed frees by O’Dwyer had them level for the 7th time 2-10 to 1-13. Entering the final quarter they were tied for the eighth and last time at 2-11 to 1-14. Ballincoll­ig had a goal by Tadhg O’Connell with O’Dwyer following with a point.

Fionn Moynihan landed a very good pointed free after a foul on impressive Billy Kingston 2-15 to 2-12. Kingston pointed a late free. However it was Ballincoll­ig who sealed their place in the final against Midleton with two late pointed frees by their key player James Dwyer.
