U14 NORTH CORK CHAMPIONS

Kilshannig under-14 footballers are North Cork champions after a great win against a gallant Duarigle Gaels team in Kilbrin last Saturday evening. Duarigle Gaels got off to a great start going ahead with a couple of great long distance points before our boys settled and opened their account with points from Ben Creedon and Shane O’Connell. Excellent team play from the defence out led to goals from James Dunne, Ben Creedon and Alex O’Leary (2). Further points from Joe Power and Donnchad O’Doherty gave Kilshannig a comfortable half time lead of 4-4 to 0-4 points.

In the second half points from Ben Creedon (2), Donnchad O’Doherty, Seán O’Connell, Darragh Clifford, Seán O’Riordan along with goals from Ben Creedon, Anthony Jenks, Shane O’Connell, and Tim Kavanagh resulted in a final score of Kilshannig 8-10 Duarigle Gaels 1-7. At the end of the game our captain Shane O’Connell accepted the cup and gave a great speech before the celebrations began.

In truth this was a complete squad performance with all fit members of the squad playing their part on the day. Goalkeeper Alan O’Flynn was rock solid in goals and his kick outs were highly effective. Gavin McCarthy, Colm Ring, Seán Crowley, Brian O’Connor and Darragh Nolan were Impenetrable in the full back line over the hour.

The half backs of Alan O’Connell, Seán O’Riordan, Colm Geary and Donagh Ryan were majestic and that line was the launch pad for most of the scores at the other end of the field. Our midfield combination of Shane O’Connell and Donnchad O’Doherty were just superb and really controlled the game playing some beautiful link up football between defence and attack.

The incredibly effective and hard working half forwards of Anthony Jenks, Joe Power, James Dunne, Tim Kavanagh ran themselves into the ground and were a key line in collecting the ball from defence before moving it quickly into the full forward line. The constant movement of the inside forward wizards of Ben Creedon, Alex O’Leary, Seán O’Connell, Darragh Clifford and Paudie O’Riordan ensured that there was always a player free to take the pass and setup the score.

Paddy Barrow was injured and Kennedy Amechi were unavailable on the day but are very much part of the squad. The focus of this group is on the entire squad and the mentors of Dominic O’Connell, Dominic Jenks, Colm Crowley and Ger Creedon were absolutely thrilled that every member of the squad played their part in a memorable win.

A sincere thank you goes to fellow club man Damien Murphy, who provided physio services on the day. Damien is a physiotherapist who has recently returned from New Zealand and we wish him well in his career. Further thanks goes to our goalkeeping coach Gavin Creedon, who is currently working very effectively with Alan.

A special thank you to Tim Ring for all the behind the scenes advice and support. Finally the squad and mentors wish to thank the club, the supporters and in particular the families and friends who have supported and continue to support the team.

It’s a great time for football in Kilshannig with our under-21s, minors and now our under-14s into county semi-finals. Well done to all and let the journey continue.
