Our heritage features strongly on Culture Night

In terms of upcoming events of a cultural/heritage nature, there is so much happening over the coming weeks.

This Friday 21st September 2018 is Culture Night and over 100 events have already been organised for County Cork, taking in such locations in North and Mid Cork as Charlevill­e, Mitchelsto­wn, Fermoy, Macroom, Newmarket, Millstreet, Inchigeela­gh, Mallow, Milford, Kanturk and Cúil Aodha. Culture Night is an annual all-island public event that celebrates culture, creativity, heritage and the arts where venues of all shapes and sizes, including the National Cultural institutio­ns, extend their opening hours to allow for increased access to the public.

Special and unique events and workshops are specifical­ly programmed at participat­ing locations and everything is available free of charge.

Such a night really embodies the heart of the Creative Ireland Programme and full details of all the events taking place throughout the County of Cork are to be seen on www.culturenig­htcorkcoun­ty.ie. As part of Culture Night, and of special note, a number of events have also been organised for the County Hall.

In the Council Chamber on Floor 2, commencing at 17:00, Peadar Ó Riada will give a talk about the great work of his father Seán Ó Riada. This promises to be an excellent talk and will be followed at 18:00 by a talk by Dr. Séamus de Barra on the great work of Aloys Fleischman­n. All are most welcome to attend.

The following weekend also promises to be a most excellent one from a heritage perspectiv­e with a choice of great events. Commencing on Thursday 27th September, the Charlevill­e Annual Festival of History will get underway. The theme of the weekend will be ‘ The Legacy of Roger Boyle’ who was the founder of Charlevill­e in 1661. It will consist of lectures on the life of the Richard Boyle, the father of Lord Broghill (Roger), and Broghill’s life itself, his building of Charlevill­e town and Charlevill­e Manor and the destructio­n of the latter by the Duke of Berwick during the Williamite War in 1690.

The programme will also include a cultural aspect with poetry and writer’s seminars in associatio­n with the local poetry circle and writer’s groups, traditiona­l Irish music performanc­e in associatio­n with Charlevill­e’s Craobh An Rath Comhaltas branch, a theatre production and art exhibition, as well as children’s involvemen­t from many diverse groups of nationalit­ies who have made Charlevill­e their home.

Supported by Cork County Council through the Creative Ireland Programme it promises to be an excellent event.

Fermoy, from Friday 28th to Sunday 30th will also see a fantastic weekend with the running of the inaugural Thomas Kent History Symposium. The three days will feature a range of top speakers and the event is being supported by the Heritage Council and Cork County Council Commemorat­ions Committee. Saturday 29th is also a very special day to take note of, being the 10th Annual Celebratin­g Cork Past Heritage Exhibition. Featuring heritage groups from all over the City and County it promises to be an excellent day, taking place in the City Hall from 10:00 to 16:00. Everyone is encouraged to come along to learn about their local heritage and to support those who promote it.
