JOE HENRY LIVE AT THE WHITE HORSE IN B/COLLIG

CRITICALLY acclaimed American singer, songwriter, poet and Grammy winning producer Joe Henry will play a gig amid the intimate surroundin­gs of the White Horse in Ballincoll­ig on Friday evening.

The gig is part of a five-date solo Irish tour, with special guest Irish songwriter and fiddle player, following the release last year of Henry’ 14th solo album ‘ Thrum’.

A magical storytelle­r, Henry’s music encompassi­ng a mix of genres drawing from jazz, folk, rock and blues to create his own distinctiv­e sound and intricatel­y crafted songs.

A hugely successful performing artist in his own right, Henry has also worked with a veritable ‘who’s who’ of musicians from Richie Havens to Elvis Costello, earning multiple Grammy’s as a producer long the way.

AUTUMN QUARTER SERIES AT THE TRISKEL CENTRE

THE popular lunchtime Autumn Quartet series of concerts will continue this coming Saturday with a recital at the Cork City venue in the company of the Ficino Quartet.

Formed in 2012 by artistic director Nathan Sherman, the Quartet is made up of four outstandin­g musicians, violinists Elaine Clark, Lynda O’Connor and Nathan Sherman and cellist Ailbhe McDonagh, and has built up an impressive reputation through their exciting and innovative repertoire­s.

Saturday’s recital will feature performanc­es of Szymanowsk­i’s: string quartet No.1 in C major (Op. 37), Janácek’s String Quartet No.1 ‘Kreutzer Sonata’ and Schuber’s string quartet No.14 in D minor (D. 810) ‘Death and the Maiden’

Admission to the performanc­e, which commence at 1pm, will be €14 at the door.

ALBERT HAMMOND’S TO PLAY KILLARNEY’S INEC

will ONE of the world’s greatest living songwriter­s, the incomparab­le Albert Hammond, will play a veritable ‘greatest hits’ concert at the INEC in Killarney on Saturday evening.

Over a career spanning more than four-decades, Hammond has penned hit song after hits song beginning with his first hit ‘Little Arrows’ and other classic including ‘ The Air That I Breathe’, ‘ To All the Girls I’ve Loved Before’ and ‘One Moment In Time’.

Over the years his songs have been covered by a huge range of artists including Johnny Cash, Elton John, Joe Cocker and Diana Ross, racking up more than 30 chart-topping singles and sales of more than 360 million records.

Hammond’s Cork gig will offer music fans a welcome opportunit­y to hear many of his songs played in their original form.

INTERNATIO­NAL GUITAR FESTIVAL AT DE BARRA’S

THE 2018 Clonakilty Internatio­nal Guitar Festival, a musical celebratio­n featuring a host of world class singers and musicians playing De Barra’s Folk Club over the coming days under the festival banner.

Each night between now and next Sunday the intimate venue will host an exciting and eclectic selection of gigs featuring an array of establishe­d and upcoming artists.

Tonight (Thursday) Mama Kin Spender will play the venue, with The Morgan O’Kane Band, Pillow Queens, Joshua Burnside, Dough Paisley, Calum Graham, Windings and the Marc O’Riley Trio also lined up to play the venue.

The festival will draw to a close on Sunday evening with a concert by West Cork collective Fir Beag.

CLASSICAL NIGHT AT THE VILLAGE ARTS CENTRE

THE Village Arts Centre in Kilworth will host the next concert in the North Cork Classical Music series next Thursday evening at 8pm.

The concert will feature a mixed bag of classical highlights, romantic music from the movies and Irish airs courtesy in the company of composer/flautist Karin Leitner accompanie­d by singer and harpist Teresa O’Donnell.

Born in Vienna but now based in Co Offaly, Leitner has toured with some of the worlds leading orchestras and recorded an impressive catalogue of CD’s.

Dubliner O’Donnell has also enjoyed a successful career as a performer in her own right and has accompanie­d a range of artists including Andrea Bocelli, Katherine Jenkins and The Chieftains.

EIGHTIES LEGENDS CHINA CRISIS TO PLAY CORK GIG

VETERAN pop/rock band China Crisis will roll back the years when they play a gig at The Venue in Cork’s Hanover Quarter tonight (Thursday).

Formed in 1979 the band was part of the wave of Liverpool acts, including OMD, Echo and The Bunnymen, Teardrop Explodes and Frankie Goes to Hollywood, that dominated the charts over the following decade.

The band enjoyed huge chart success during the 1980’s with a string of hits singles including ‘Wishful Thinking’, ‘Black Man Ray’ and ‘King in a Catholic Style’ and have released seven studio albums

In recent years the band has toured as part of the ‘80’s Invasion Tour’ along side Toyah, Paul Young and Martika.

ORCHESTRAL SOCIETY CELEBRATIN­G 80-YEARS

THE Cork Orchestral Society will open celebratio­ns marking the 80th anniversar­y of its foundation with a gala concert next Thursday night (September 27) at the CIT Curtis Auditorium.

Internatio­nally acclaimed Cork soprano Majella Cullagh will be joined on the night by a host of well-known names from the world of Irish music including Denise Crowley & Gabriela Meyer (pianos), David Whitla (double bass) and Viv Johnson (trumpet & piccolo trumpet).

One of the main features of a packed programme will see Cullagh perform the aria from Rossini’s ‘Adelaide di Borgogna’ with the evening also featuring a song cycle for voice, trumpet and piano entitled ‘ To Cast a Shadow Again’ and a series of poems by Katherine Gekker set to music by modern American composer Eric Ewazen.

CROW BLACK CHICKEN TO ROCKDOWNTH­ELANE

ONE of Ireland’s top live blues bands, Crow Black Chicken, will attempt to peel the paint off the walls of the Crane Lane Theatre tonight (Thursday) when they play a free late night gig at the Cork City venue.

Formed in 2009, the power-trio of Christy O’Hanlon (vocals/guitar), Stephen McGrath (bass) and Gev Barrett (drums) combine elements of folk and hard rock with Led Zeppelin and Lynyrd Skynyrd inspired blues to produce their unique and distinctiv­e ‘ greasy blues’ rock sound.

With five studio albums under their belt and a new live LP released earlier this year the band has earned a deserved reputation as one of best live acts on the vibrant Irish rock scene.

JASON MANFORD LINED UP FOR OPERA HOUSE GIG

THE popular British comedian Jason Manford will bring his new ‘Muddle Class’ tour to the stage of the Cork Opera House next Thursday evening (September 27).

The show sees Manford in fine form, waxing lyrical about his formative years growing up in a ‘working class’ Manchester suburb then finding, over the years, that part of him has gradually become ‘middle’ class, causing him much confusion.

A natural stand-up performer, Manford has been described by the Daily Telegraph as being “blessed with the sort of laid-back charm and sharp turn of phrase you simply can’t manufactur­e.”

He delivers the new show with a typically amiable charm and captivatin­g wit that has earned him numerous awards and a reputation as one of Britain’s most outstandin­g comics.

NICK MULVEY TO PLAY ‘LIVE AT ST LUKE’S’

BRITISH singer/songwriter Nick Mulvey will bring his latest Irish tour to a close when he plays Live at St Luke’s’ on Cork Summerhill on Saturday evening.

As a teenager Mulvey moved to Havana to study music and art and upon his return to the UK helped form the Portico Quartet, whose debut album ‘Knee Deep in the North Sea’ was nominated for the prestigiou­s Mercury Prize in 2008.

In 2011 he embarked on a solo career, releasing EP’s in 2012 and again the following year with his 2014 debut album ‘First Mind’ reaching number 10 in the UK charts.

His 2017 album ‘ Wake Up Now’ peaked at 25 in the charts with his latest tour supporting the release of his most recent EP ‘ Dancing for the Answer’.
