CORK County Council has published the tender seeking contractors to build the new fire station in Kanturk.

Cork County Council Fire Services Department proposes to provide a new fire station at a vacant council owned site on Percival St junction to Mill Road, Kanturk to replace existing the fire station which is located at St. Theresa’s Place in the town.

The current fire station is located on a confined site, adjacent to a housing estate which eliminates any prospect of allowing the current facilities to be considered for upgrading.

Welcoming the news that the tender has been published for the new Fire Station in Kanturk, Cllr John Paul O’Shea (FG) said it is an important step in the process of having a new Fire Station in Kanturk.

“The Kanturk Fire Brigade covers the towns of Kanturk and Newmarket as well as many small villages in the vicinity. The Fire Brigade serves a population of 15,000 people and responds to about 110 incidents per year,” he said.

The new fire station will comprise of two new appliance bays, lobby, changing rooms, toilets, shower room, lecture/ training room and associated ancillary buildings with drill yard, forecourt, parking facilities, landscaping and footpath realignment works.

“The new Fire Station when constructed will play a pivotal role in the North Cork town of Kanturk. It is important we support the fire services and the people who put themselves forward as retained firefighters for our town,” Cllr. O’ Shea added.

“This new facility will assist in encouraging new retained firefighters for Kanturk along with supporting all of our fantastic and hardworking existing firefighters”.
