HUGO CASEY EVENT ANOTHER GREAT SUCCESS

-

THE annual Hugo Casey U-12 Tournament was played in ideal conditions in TCP on Saturday.

The occasion was graced by the presence of Hugo’s widow, Antoinette, his daughters Fidelma and Angela, grandchildren Zoe and Danny – sporting the Macroom colours for the day – and his sister Regina, Chapel Cross.

A table displayed photos of the 1962 win when Hugo captained Macroom to its last senior championship victory. Memories brought tears to the eye.

Macroom unluckily lost to Bantry in the first game, comfortably beating Kilshannig in the second and lost to Kenmare in the third.

In the cup final Kilshannig prevailed and Bantry beat Macroom in the plate final. Macroom led with two minutes to go but conceded a late goal and point.

Refreshments were served throughout.

Concubhar Murray, Diarmuid Holland, Tony Dineen and Órla Kelleher expertly organised the event. Julie Murray, with her children Donagh, Ciarán and Clodagh, catered superbly for the players and supporters with the generously donated fruit, scones and ‘goodies’.

Danny Morey was czar of the parking and a small army of young players helped in many ways and thanks go too to Michael Cahill for the use of his whiteboard.

Although Macroom didn’t win, the club can be proud of its well-run event. To crown a memorable day, Billy Fitzgerald presented club beanie hats to the players and Tony Dineen, on behalf of Permanent/EBS, donated five footballs to the club.

Meanwhile, Macroom Boys’ School travelled and beat Clonakilty in the pool stage of the School Shield competition and finished top of their section. The final score Macroom 6-8, Clonakilty 0-3. The semi-final, against Ballinora, will be played on Thursday in Macroom Tadhg Sheehan is delighted with his charges.

U-11s: Macroom played Crosshaven away on Saturday evening and were beaten by a better team. Macroom found it harder to score. All the Macroom boys tried hard.

U-6s. They entertained Kilmurry on Saturday morning and had four tough matches. Their season will end soon and they had a most enjoyable year.
