Kildorrery footballer­s end 35-year wait for title

KILDORRERY had a very easy win over Buttevant in the Ballylough Milling JBFC(2) final at Castletown­roche on Sunday. From the start the winners gained control throughout the field and the outcome was never in doubt. Andrew O’Brien had a goal and three points by the 11th minute. Good play by James Fox led to a Johnny McCarthy point.

Buttevant had their opening score a point by Casey O’Gorman (free) in the 13th minute. Johnny McCarthy replied with a point and he punched to the net in the 17th minute as Kildorrery led by 2-5 to 0-1. In the 24th minute Johnny McCarthy placed James Magnier for a well taken goal. James Magnier and Johnny McCarthy followed with two points each as the ‘Hill’ were 3-9 to 0-1 clear at the break.

On the restart the trend was much the same. Good play by Darren Noonan led to a well taken Billy Keane point. Kildorrery replied with points by Andrew O’Brien and James Magnier. They had their 4th goal in the 36th minute when David Kelly and Shane Walsh worked well for Andrew O’Brien who goaled 4-11 to 0-2. David Kelly, Andrew O’Brien, David Harrington, James Magnier, Eugene Sweeney and Jerry McCarthy followed with Kildorrery points while Buttevant who battled to the final whistle had late points by Darren Noonan and Jack Ivory.

After the game Barry Aherne Board Chairman presented the cup to the winning captain William Coffey. James Magnier was named ‘man of the match’. It marked Kildorrery’s first win in this championsh­ip after a lapse of 35 years, their last success being in 1983.
