Clyda Rovers lands the goals to beat Kilara and take U-16 title

CLYDA Rovers had seven points to spare over Kilara Og in the Rebel Og U-16 B1 FC final at Fermoy in Fermoy. Over the hour both sides had their chances but in the end the overall balance and team work of Clyda Rovers proved decisive.

The winners had key players in Conor Corbett on the ‘40’ and Eoin Walsh on the edge of the square who scored 2-11 between them. Kilara Og had a very good centre forward in Mark Carey who accounted for 1-10 of his sides tally but overall he lacked support. The Kilworth-Araglin side got off to a very good start with early points by Mark Carey and Dean Jordan (2).

Rovers had to wait until the eighth minute when Mikey Corbett worked well on the wing for Eoin Walsh to point. Points by Conor Corbett and Eoin Walsh (free) had them level 0-3 each after 12 minutes. Clyda Rovers hit the front with two good points by Conor Corbett.

At the end of the first quarter Mark Carey with a free left just a point between them. Both sides swapped a point before Mark Carey placed Michael Sheehan who soloed through and scored a great goal for Kilara Og that edged them ahead 1-5 to 0-6. Dean Jordan followed with a point. Clyda Rovers forced level when Conor Corbett soloed through and goaled 1-6 each. Kilara Og responded well-Mark Carey put Leo Coffey through and forced a penalty that Mark Carey converted. Carey followed with an injury time point as Kilara led at the break 2-7 to 1- 6.

On the resumption Mark Carey added a pointed free. Clyda replied with a Conor Corbett pointed free following a foul on Cathal Twohig. Rovers then were awarded a penalty when Cathal Twohig placed Conor Corbett who was brought down and Eoin Walsh goaled from the spot kick. Luke Brophy levelled at 2-8 each by the 42nd minute. Clyda Rovers edged two points clear with Kilara Og battling back very well and they were level again at 2-10 each entering the final quarter. Mark Carey gave his side the lead once more. Conor Corbett levelled with a very good point. From here on Clyda did very well. Points by Conor Corbett edged them 2-13 to 2-11 clear.

In the 52nd minute Conor Corbett cut through from the ‘40’ and placed Ben Buckley who goaled opening up a five point lead 3-13 to 2-11. Mark Carey had another point with Conor Corbett and Adam Jack with points for Rovers as they moved 6 clear 3-15 to 2-12.
