veterinary politics for the past 25 years.

2016 was a very busy year for her, when she received the honour of becoming President of Veterinary Ireland, the representative body for vets in this country, the highlight of which was hosting the World cattle conference in Dublin, attracting expertise from around the world. Recently she has taken on a more managerial role, but still goes out on farm calls whenever she can.

Liam hailed from Waterford a long time ago, and has been working in Millstreet all his life. He has a special interest in small animal behavioural medicine. Liam is an avid gardener, and keeps Faverolle hens in his back garden. He also speaks fluent French, and loves to holiday in France with his family.

Michael is a Dromtarriffe man, having grown up on a dairy farm in Dromagh. He has expanded his interest in dairy cattle by completing an additional qualification in 2014, making him a certificate holder in Dairy Herd Health as recognition of his expertise in the area. Michael loves hillwalking and up to recently played indoor soccer.

Andreas was born in Germany, but after spending 18 years living in Millstreet, he’s become one of the locals. Andreas has an interest in small animal surgery, and is about to start studying for a further qualification in this area to expand his knowledge. You might meet Andreas on the road riding his motorbike, but when feeling less like a daredevil, he can be found polishing up on his archery skills.

Greg is a Waterford man, but has settled in Millstreet, having married his lovely wife Sarah recently. Apart from his love of dairy practice, Greg has a certificate in exotic animal medicine, and has expertise in animals such as snakes, reptile, rabbits and even birds, and vets all over the country refer their cases to him. Greg loves nothing more than to go for a walk with his Labrador ‘Hudson’.

Jane is a second generation vet - having grown up on the top floor of her parent’s veterinary practice in Dromagh, no other career would have fit the bill. Jane has spent time in mixed practice, but for the last 2 years has worked in top class referral hospitals in the UK and will finish her certificate in cardiology (heart medicine) next Spring, making her an advanced practitioner in this area (once her exams are done and dusted!). Jane has recently tried her hand at radio, becoming the resident vet on C103 every Thursday lunchtime.

Niamh comes from farming stock on the Meath Dublin border, and has taken to working in a dairy area like a duck to water. Niamh spends her weekends showing Hereford cattle at shows all over the country, so is no stranger to handling stock.

Niamh is the cause of the rest of the vet’s weight gain, with irresistible cakes baked by her every Friday for the team. Niamh can eat as many cakes as she likes, as she runs off the calories partaking in half marathons in her spare time.

Tommy comes from Macroom, and his experience working in Australia as a Ranger led him to return to university to study veterinary. Having seen practice as a student, and now working with us since graduation, he’s part of the furniture. Tommy is an avid golfer, and also plays guitar in his spare time.

Niall is a Kerryman from Beaufort near Killarney, where he grew up on a large dairy farm. Having moved to work with us, he goes home to see the herd and help his father in any spare time he has.

Aoife comes to us from the strong dairy area of Skibbereen, having recently moved to join our team. Aoife is also interested in running, completing half marathons on her weekends off.

There will always be several vets available at the hospital in Newmarket, but you’ll probably see some faces more than others. Whoever you meet, you can be assured of a professional, friendly veterinary service at any time of the day and night.

The team at Island Wood Veterinary Hospital would like to invite any customers and people in the local area to pop in to their open day being held this Friday 5th October 9.30am – 5.30pm (also open during lunch 1-2pm on this day) at the hospital in Newmarket to meet the team over a cup of tea and a piece of cake. Entry to a draw, with prizes such as a free herd test for farmers or a year’s free grooming for pet owners are on offer for those who attend, as well as many more prizes on the day.
