Historic win for Junior A hurling team

ON Friday night last at Mallow, our Junior A hurlers advanced to the quarter-finals of the county championsh­ip with a merited 1-16 to 1-14 victory over city champions Nemo Rangers.

A feature of the game was the scored by Donal Hannon.

His play has been immaculate from all angles.

In 20 championsh­ip appearance­s 1-12 since his 2012 debut, Donal has amassed 9-154 (181 points). That is a match average of nine points per game.

Newmarket now face Ballinasca­rthy in the quarter-finals.

This was Newmarket’s first victory in a County Junior A Championsh­ip game since 1935, when Inniscara were defeated in a replay.

Our Junior B hurlers interest in the county championsh­ip ended at Kilbrin last Saturday when a classy mallow side proved far superior on a 2-24 to 1-6 victory.
