Fun day out proves highly educational too for St Mary’s Transition Year Class
ST Mary’s TY class recently attended the RSA’s ‘Drive for Life’ presentation, organised by Cork County Council. Students Emma Deasy, Daniella Morey, Rachel Dromey and Aisling Murray explain further:
‘The fourth year class attended the presentation expecting a fun afternoon out, but it was also surprisingly educational. The event showcased all of the dangers of driving and how to prevent them. These dangers include driving under the influence of alcohol, distractions on the road and the main danger; speeding.
‘ The members of the RSA gave a gripping speech on the amount of accidents on the road and how serious road accidents can be. From this we learned that, last year alone, a shocking 152 people were killed on Irish roads.
‘ The RSA gives presentations to transition year students across Ireland who will soon be learning to drive because (as stated by one of the RSA instructors on the day) young people are the most vulnerable road users.
‘ This presentation came at a good time as many of us are hoping to do our theory tests in the near future.
‘ Throughout the event we found entertainment through the use of simulations and games designed to teach us about the dangers of the road.
‘ The simulations included a drink driving experience, driving with distractions such as using your mobile phone, and how a seatbelt can save your life. The simulations were frightening and gave us a much needed eye opener.
‘One simulation involved four students getting into a car as the car did a full rotation demonstrating what happens when a car crashes, and highlighting the importance of your seatbelt and airbag. What many of us didn’t know is that it is crucial to tighten your seatbelt as wearing your seatbelt loosely is like wearing no seatbelt at all.
‘ There were a few side effects from the simulation, including a heavy head and shattered nerves which would be intensified if the crash was real, this scared a lot of our class.
‘ The experience was a revelation. We learned how fast an accident can occur and how you do not realize what is happening until it’s too late. It is clear that the whole experience has motivated our class to be sensible on the road and has taught us the significance of road safety.’
