‘Reduced speed limits in Cork housing estates will make it safer for everyone’

-

DEPUTY Aindrias Moynihan (FF) has welcomed the proposals to reduce speed limits in housing estates following a review by Cork County Council earlier this year.

Last week Cork County Council approved the proposals, and the next step will be the installation of new signage.

“This is a really important initiative as I know that many residents, especially parents of young children, are very worried about cars driving through their estates at very high speeds,” said the Cork NW TD.

“One of the changes will be a new 30 km/hour speed limit in the Muskerry Estate in Ballincollig. With access at both ends, it is often used as a rat run by motorists

“The Muskerry Estate is one of the primary access points to the girls’ primary school which located on the edge of the estate. Any measure that makes the roads safer for children is welcome.

“On a regular basis, residents come into my constituency offices in both Ballincollig and Macroom anxious to see a revision of the max speed limits in their estates. Such a downward revision will improve safety for pedestrians and children.

“There is never any justifiable reason for driving through housing estates at 60 or 70 km/hour. This is an important move by the County Council, and one I wholeheartedly support,” concluded Moynihan.
