O’Mahony-inspired Shandrum march on at Killeagh’s expense

SHANDRUM the (Newtown-Dromina) amalgamati­on had three points to spare over Killeagh in Round 2 of the County U-21 Premier (1) HC at Mallow on Wednesday night.

It was keenly contested all through. Timmy O’Mahony opened with an early pointed free with Killian Treacy replying in the fourth minute. The East Cork side hit the front with two Daniel Landers frees.

Timmy O’Mahony added another free before Kevin Murphy pointed from long range for Killeagh in the 12th minute. The Avondhu side hit a purple patch and a series of well taken points had them 0-6 to 0-5 clear after 25 minutes. Killeagh with two late points led at the break 0-8 to 0-5.

Cormac O’Brien pointed a free on the restart. Good play by Sean Walsh led to a well taken goal by Daniel Hickey 1-8 to 0-6. Points for Shandrum by Cormac O’Brien, David Jones and Sean Griffin had the lead down to two points 1-8 to 0- 9.

Entering the final quarter David Jones landed a fine point. Cathal Deane kept Killeagh 1-9 to 0-10 clear by the 49th minute. In the 53rd minute John Geary soloed through but his goal bound effort was well saved by Darren Cusack.

Timmy O’Mahony with a long range pointed free cut the lead to the minimum 1-9 to 0-11. In the closing moments good play by Sean Griffin led to a great David Jones goal as Shandrum edged ahead 1-11 to 1-9.

Daniel Landers with a pointed free cut the lead to the minimum. Shandrum finished out the game with points by Timmy O’Mahony and Stephen Coughlan as they progressed to the quarter-finals.
