Trinity Gaels regain U-18 football title

Trinity Gaels 2-17 Doneraile 2-15

THIS was thrilling Rebel Og North Minor B 2 13-a-side football championsh­ip final at Rathcoole on Sunday. The lead changed hands on a number of occasions and they were level five times.

Good play by David Cottrell led to the opening score a point by Adam Birtley. Doneraile broke down field and a free by Darren Linehan was finished to the net by Stephen Ryan. Gaels fought back with Adam Birtley placing Cian Crowley for a point. David Cottrell levelled from a free.

Doneraile again hit the front when Bertie Kelleher soloed through and placed Darren Linehan for a fine point. Doneraile had three wides before a free by David Cottrell was collected by Cian Crowley who placed Michael Browne for a good point under pressure that levelled 1-1 to 0-4. Doneraile were off target again before Jamie Kenneally came close to a goal but was denied by Billy Sheedy. Good work by Darren Linehan and Mark Kelly saw impressive Tony Flynn cut through only to be denied by the upright. Kevin Smith worked well for Darren Linehan who kicked over. At the break Doneraile led 1-3 to 0-4.

On the resumption the Newmarket-Glenlara side did well. Cian Crowley pointed. Good play for Doneraile by Sean Enright and Darren Linehan led to a good point by Tony Flynn. Adam Birtley was denied by the upright. Trinity Gaels keeper Ben Newman saved well from William Hunter-Hickey before Tony Flynn placed Sean Enright for a point that gave Doneraile a goal lead 1-5 to 0-5. Doneraile edged four points clear when Sean Enright and William Hunter-Hickey combined well for Aidan O’Donoghue who kicked over. In the 15th minute a long delivery from Gaels captain Paddy Browne struck the upright with Adam Birtley on hand to goal from the rebound. Cian Donlon pointed for Doneraile who moved two points clear.

The Duhallow side came strong. Cian Crowley pointed and the same player combined with David Cottrell who placed Adam Birtley for his second goal as Gaels led 2-6 to 1-7. Points were exchanged as the winners led 2-8 to 1-8 after 50 minutes. Tony Flynn soloed through and kicked a great Doneraile point. Flynn followed with another and the sides were level with three minutes to go when Flynn and Cian Donlon worked well for Darren Linehan who levelled 2- 8 to 1-11. Doneraile now on a roll were denied when a free by Darren Linehan came back off the post. In the closing moments Stephen Ryan gave Doneraile the lead. Trinity Gaels levelled in injury time through a David Cottrell free 1-12 to 2-9.

Extra time prevailed and Trinity Gaels got off to a great start Padraigh O’Sullivan and Cian Crowley added two points each as they moved 2-13 to 1-12 clear. Doneraile came back well, they had points by Darren Linehan and Stephen Ryan. Sean Murphy made some valuable clearances for Trinity Gaels. In the 7th minute good play by Cian Donlon and Darren Linehan led to a great goal by Sean Enright that put Doneraile ahead 2-14 to 2-13. Deep in injury-time they were deadlocked at 2-14 each when David Cottrell pointed a free.

On the resumption David Cottrell pointed another free. Cian Crowley pointed after a four man attack and Paddy Browne and Jamie Kenneally worked well for Adam Birtley who made it 2-17 to 2-14. Doneraile came close to an equalising goal when Stephen Ryan and Darren Linehan cut through with Ryan taking the return pass but his effort at goal from close range went over off the bar for the last score of the game as Trinity Gaels regained the title they last held in 2016.

After the game Sean McAuIiffe Chairman Rebel Og presented the Hyland Memorial Cup (Kilworth) to the winning captain Paddy Browne.
