Mallow minors edged out by Erins Own

Erins Own 0-23 Mallow 1-19

ERINS Own had a narrow victory over Mallow in the Cork Co Under 21 Premier 2 HC Round 2 at Fermoy on Saturday.

The game was played between two evenly matched teams with Robbie O’Flynn and Paul Lyons outstandin­g for their respective sides. They were level on eight occasions and extra time looked very likely.

Erins Own opened the scoring in the second minute when Ronan Blackton put Cathal Linehan in for a point. Stephen O’Callaghan levelled soon after. Mallow hit the front through Charlie Carroll and Paul Lyons free 0-4 to 0-1.

Andrew O’Sullivan pointed for the Caherlag side. Both sides swapped points as they were deadlocked 0-6, 0-7, and 0-8 each. Paul Lyons with a long range point gave Mallow the lead.

Robbie O’Flynn replied from a long range free as they were deadlocked at 0-9 each. By the 24th minute Robbie O’Flynn pointed a ‘65 with Paul Lyons with a free having them tied once again at 0-10 apiece.

Erins Own had a late point by Andrew O’Sullivan after good play by Cathal McNamara. In injury time Robbie O’Flynn with another free edged Erins Own 0-12 to 0-10 clear at the break.

The trend was much the same on the changeover. Paul Lyons landed a long range pointed free. A foul on Conor Broderick led to a pointed free by Robbie O’Flynn. Good play for Mallow by Seamus Buckley and Eoin Murphy led to a fine point by Stephen O’Callaghan.

In the 38th minute good play by Conor Broderick to Ronan Twomey saw Erins Own regain the two point lead. Charlie Carroll had a Mallow point as the lead was down to the minimum.

The only goal of the game came in the 44th minute when Stephen O’Callaghan goaled after a four man attack. Mallow now doing well added a point by Eoghan Buckley as they moved a goal clear.

Erins Own never gave up they won a lot of ball in the half backline and broke up a number of Mallow attacks. Robbie O’Flynn with a free was followed by a Darragh Moynihan point after a solo run.

O’Flynn with some well taken points levelled at 1-15 to 0-18. O’Flynn gave his side the lead with a free. A foul on Joe Ryan led to another pointed free by Robbie O’Flynn as Erins Own moved 0-20 to 1-15 ahead. Mallow fought back well. Peadar Hennessy had a very good point.

They came close to a goal when Eoghan Buckley was put through but Tom Dillon saved very well from close range. A well placed puck-out by Tom Dillon found Ronan Twomey who sent over.

Entering the closing moments Paul Lyons with another Mallow free cut the lead to the minimum 0-21 to 1-17. Points were exchanged by Cathal Linehan and Matthew McGlynn that had Erins Own a single point ahead in the 62nd minute 0-22 to 1-18.

Mallow got level when Charlie Carroll struck a massive point. From the puckout by Tom Dillon- Robbie O’Flynn gained possession from a high catch and he struck the winning point in the 65th minute that was followed by the final whistle. Erins Own started and finished the game with 9 minor players. Mallow have still a chances they face Ballincoll­ig in the losers section.
