HUGH TINNEY IN CONCERT AT THE STACK THEATRE

INTERNATIO­NALLY acclaimed Irish classical pianist Hugh Tinney will play a concert next Thursday evening (November 1) at the CIT School of Music’s Stack Theatre.

The concert, part of a 12-date Irish tour celebratin­g Tinney’s 60th birthday, will include a diverse musical programme including perennial favourites by Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin as well as modern compositio­ns by Belfast-born Ian Wilson and British composer Tomas Adés.

During a career spanning more than three decades the multi-award winning pianist has performed solo concerts and worked with distinguis­hed individual­s and ensembles in more than 35 countries.

The former artistic director of the Music in Greta Irish Houses Festival, Tinney was awarded an Honorary Doctorate in Music by the National University of Ireland in 2007.

COMPLETE STONE ROSES TO PLAY AT THE VENUE

ONE of the UK’s most successful tribute bands, The Complete Stones Roses, will rekindle memories of the ‘Madchester’ movement of the 1980’s and 90’s when they The Venue in Cork on Saturday night.

The band remain true to the original sound of arguably one of the most influentia­l groups ever to have graced the British ‘indie’ scene, with the Stone Roses bassist Mani saying they did their songs “real justice....at times playing better than we did”.

They have also been praised by other music insiders, with Mani, and other ‘Madchester’ legends including Peter Hook (New Order), Bez (Happy Mondays) and Tom Hingley (Inspiral Carpets) performing alongside the band.

JENNY GREEN TO PLAY SECOND OPERA HSE GIG

AFTER her gig at the Cork Opera House next Sunday sold out, Jenny Greene has announced she is to play a second date at the venue the following night.

One of Ireland’s most popular DJ’s, Greene is well-known to music fans through her work with RTE 2FM, presenting the hugely popular ‘Electric Disco’ show on Saturday nights and co-hosting the weekday morning slot on with Nicky Byrne.

Her live sets that have enthralled audiences at festivals across the country and through her collaborat­ion with the RTE Concert Orchestra, Greene has also breathed new life into some of the biggest dance classics of the past two decades.

She will be joined for the show by Cork mavericks Generic People, who will supply cutting edge visuals.

MERCURY NOMINATED TRIO TO ROLL INTO CORK

THE Mercury Prize nominated Roller Trio will play a gig in the intimate Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre on Sunday afternoon at 2.30pm.

Hailed DJ Gilles Patterson as “the new sound of UK jazz”, the trio deliver punchy grooves, deceptivel­y catchy riffs and swirling electronic­a delivered with a trademark swagger and visceral energy that has excited critics and music fans alike.

Influenced by a melting pot of acts from Fly Trio and Tim Berne to Queens of the Stone Age and Flying Lotus, the Leeds-based trio waste no time in getting heads bobbing with their idiosyncra­tic blend of pin-tight beats, cool melodies and juddering stop-start motifs.

ROCKSTEADY SOUNDS WITH THE SERVICE

CORK band The Service will bring their foot-stomping rocksteady sound to the stage of the Crane Lane Theatre when they play a free gig at the venue on Friday night.

Formed in 1994, the six-piece performed on and off for almost a decade before becoming a more permanent fixture on the vibrant Cork music scene in 2013.

Their high-octane two-hour sets pay homage to the great ska, reggae and Two-Tone acts, with set-lists covering tracks by acts including Toots and the Maytals, Bob Marley, The Specials, The Beat and Madness to name just a few.

Favourites at festivals across the country, the band’s live performanc­es are already the stuff of legend and are guaranteed to get feet dancing, heads bopping and pulses racing.

FEEL THE BEAT AGAIN WITH HUDSON TAYLOR

FOLLOWING the release of their ‘Feel It Again’ EP, Irish folk duo Hudson Taylor will take to the stage of Cork’s Cyprus Avenue this coming Saturday night.

Brothers Alfie and Harry Hudson-Taylor cut their teeth busking on the streets of the capital prior to releasing their top ten selling, critically acclaimed debut album ‘Singing for Strangers’ in 2015.

Their acoustic, folky sound and close vocal harmonies, often compared to Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan, has seen them become regular festival favourites.

The siblings also bring a love of contempora­ry pop to their music, giving it a more modern feel, with their clever, mature and sometimes dark lyrics.

The New EP will give fans a taste of what to expect from the duo’s forthcomin­g second album.

CRAZY CHESTER LINED UP FOR COUGHLAN’S GIG

The hugely popular Cork band Crazy Chester will play a free late-night gig at Coughlan’s Live on Douglas Steet on Friday night under the umbrella of the Guinness Cork Jazz Festival.

Heavily influenced by the likes of Bob Dylan, Johnny Cash and Neil Young, the band play a style of music that effortless­ly crosses between rock, country and pure americana with their original songs tipping more than a nod to Crosby, Still, Nash & Young and The Band.

Renowned for their lively and entertaini­ng live shows, the strong and fluent musiciansh­ip of band members, combined with their strong catalogue of covers and self-penned songs separate them from the majority of ‘good time’ cover bands out there.

THE legendary Wolfe Tones will make a welcome return to the stage of the INEC in Killarney on Sunday evening.

Currently the longest running touring group in the world, The Wolfe Tones have been entertaini­ng audiences for more than five decades, packing out venues across the globe.

Following their formation in 1963 The Wolfe Tones quickly gained a reputation for their rebel inspired songs, with their music becoming the soundtrack to the lives of a generation of Irish people both at home and abroad.

Fans can expect to hear a veritable ‘Greatest Hit’s’ concert interspers­ed with some of their newer material in a show that will once again shake the rafters at the INEC.

EIMEAR REIDY TO PLAY ‘THE ISLAND’ IN COBH

CORK based cellist Eimear Reidy will perform ‘ The Island’, a stunning new compositio­n for solo cello written by Australian music producer Robert Curgenven at the Sirius Arts Centre in Cobh on Sunday evening.

Based on recordings made on, and inspired by, Heir Island off the West Cork coast the piece plumbs the topologica­l depths of the island and reflects on the idea of solitude creating a direct dialogue and bond between the music and the musician.

A founding member of the Irish Early Music Ensemble, Reidy has also toured Europe with the Irish baroque orchestra Capella Craoviensi­s and collaborat­ed with artists including Curgenven, The Quiet Club and the GaitKrash theatre ensemble. Based in Ireland, Curgenven has released multiple recordings and performed in his own right at festivals across the globe. Tickets from the venue on 021 481 3790 priced at €12.

WYVERN LINGO SET FOR A RETURN TO ST LUKE’S’

COUNTY Wicklow trio Wyvern Lingo will return to the Live at St Luke’s stage in Cork with their acclaimed live show on Saturday night.

The gig follows on from the release of ‘Out Of My Hand’s, the latest single to be taken from their critically acclaimed eponymous debut album released earlier this year.

Their most candid and politicall­y motivated song to date, ‘Out of My Hand’s’ challenges both apathy and scepticism and poses some difficult questions about out daily engagement, both politicall­y and personally, with the world around all of us.

Arguably one of the most socially aware contempora­ry Irish bands, Wyvern Lingo combine razor sharp lyrics with stunning vocal interplay to produce truly unmissable live shows.
