Ballydesmond village to get a make over

- MARIA HERLIHY

BALLYDESMOND village will get a very welcome makeover of over €400,000 as its roads and footpaths are a “key priority for Cork County Council.”

At the Kanturk Mallow municipal meeting, councillors heard how the roads were dug up to accompany the windfarm which got planning permission but as they had to lay cables this caused huge delays.

This was further compounded when the roads had to be re-dug up again to redo the cabling, which was done over the summer months.

Jim Moloney of Cork County Council explained that the cables had to be pulled through the ducts and, into the bargain, Irish Water had to put in place a new water mains – but this “must now be connected to the houses” in the region.

Mr Moloney told The Corkman that council officials met with the local community on the streetscape and architects plans, and it is hoped that these will be approved after public consultation has taken place so it will enable the Part Eight process to then take place.

Municipal District Officer Liz Donovan told councillors that in 2019 work will be done on the street and the footpaths and there is €120,000 from the Town and Village Fund to undertake this work.

Mr Moloney also told the meeting that the road in Ballydesmond will get €300,000 for works.

“In total and over a two year period of works there will be €420,000 available to Ballydesmond village for these works,” he said.

Cllr Timmy Collins (Ind) said the people of Ballydesmond must have “pure patience” as they are waiting so long to have work done. He described the condition of the road and footpaths as being in a “very bad condition.”

“Really, the state it is in now, it could cause an accident,” he said.

Cllr Bernard Moynihan (FF) said it was great that so much money was going to Ballydesmond village to get works done.

At the end of the meeting, Mr Moloney again said the ducting has now been completed but not the water works fully, and it will be next year before they will get the prospective contractors on board to get the works done.
