Hurling heroes greeted back at their alma mater

PLAYERS from the victorious Charleville Cork County Intermediate winning team, led by captain Danny O’Flynn, visited Charleville CBS primary school on last Friday afternoon with the Seamus Long Cup and the North Cork trophy, and, of course the new Cork All-Star Darragh Fitzgibbon with his trophy.

The entire school’s pupils with Principal Michael O’Sullivan and staff greeted their hurling heroes and a special cheer was reserved for the Cork All-Star Darragh Fitzgibbon. All the players present were past pupils of the CBS, while two of them, Andrew Cagney and Darren Casey, are now teachers in the school.

School Principal O’Sullivan welcomed the players and thanked them for visiting the school and, speaking to his young charges, he told them that players standing on the stage were sitting where they are now some years ago. “The fact that they are champions is due to their diligence to training and hard work at perfecting their hurling skills, and the same principle applies to your performance in school. If you work hard at your lessons you too can achieve great success,” he said. He urged the boys to keep up their hurling, and they too can achieve sporting success like the present Charleville team.

Charleville club chairman Mike Keane thanked Mr. O’Sullivan for inviting them to the school and the boys for coming to school wearing the club colours of red and white. “It is great to see the reaction to the team and we are all delighted to be here and thank you for the great welcome to the school where these lads first learned their hurling,” he said.

The players then posed for pictures and signed autographs for the boys and their parents.

Meanwhile, the team is preparing to meet the Clare Intermediate champions, Feakle, in the Munster final, which will be played at the Gaelic Grounds in Limerick on this Sunday, and all join in wishing success to the Charleville boys in their quest for further honours in the category, before they advance to contest the senior ranks in 2019.
