League title up for grabs between Knocknagree and Mayfield
KNOCKNAGREE and Mayfield hope for an end of season boost on contesting the County Football League Division 5 Final at Donoughmore on Saturday. Of course, a brilliant 2018 surfaced for Knocknagree to collect All Ireland JAFC honours by beating Multyfarmham last February.
Previously, it had been a frustrating spell for Cork teams in the provincial Junior and Intermediate grades, time and again faltering to Kerry sides. Over the previous five years, Knocknagree had attempted to vie for a county prize but without success, ever improving but short of delivering the dividends and repeating a county triumph from 1991.
Those frustrations disappeared last winter and spring, not only did Knocknagree delight their fans, their style of play has impressed many neutrals and certainly blew teams such as Mulyfarnham apart on the wide open expanses of Croke Park.
A new season beckoned, Knocknagree fared well in Division 5, interestingly, no opponent was willing to travel to play Knocknagree at home yet they finished top of the table. The championship proved tough, Rockchapel ran Knockagree close before they bettered Adrigole only to come up short to a strong St. Finbarrs outfit.
Similiar to Knockagree, Mayfield have tasted All Ireland glory in Croke Park, winners at Junior A Hurling. Not the best of starts to the IFC for Mayfield, defeated by Glenville, they recovered to better Carrigaline and Kildorrey(replay) but the campaign ended on a quarter final loss to Aghabullogue.
Not much expected between the sides here, the pair are promoted to Division 4 next season, the expectation is Knocknagree can add silverware to their collection. FIXTURES
