THE mart plays a vital part in the rural economy, not just for farmers but for traders of all descriptions.

The mart is where farmers and traders come to do business, and, very importantly, talk business. Here, it’s not just livestock that’s being traded, but also information, knowledge and experience.

And the mart is also a key social outlet for members of an industry that leaves less and less room for personal interaction

Kanturk Mart was established in 1959. Prior to that fairs were held in the streets where farmers bought and sold their cattle. Over the last 59 years Kanturk Mart has served the farming community not only in Duhallow but West Limerick, Kerry and from the four corners of the Country.

The Mart is situated in the heart of Duhallow which brings business to the town of Kanturk.

RUN BY SHAREHOLDERS

Kanturk Mart is run by a committee elected by the shareholders at each AGM.

At present the committee is made up of 16 members who meet on a monthly basis to discuss all matters. The Chairman is John Cott, Vice- Chairman Joe Noonan, and Mart Manager Seamus O’Keeffe.

The mart has put through up to 30,000 cattle and aims to keep this going. Hauliers in the region have enjoyed a steady income over the years via the mart and Kanturk Mart also prides itself in building an excellent relationship with the farming community.

ASSET TO THE TOWN

Kanturk Mart also saw an opening for a new car park for the people of the town and this was officially opened on 3rd October. It has been a huge asset to the town at a small cost of €2 per day.

Being the only business of its kind in Duhallow, Kanturk Mart brings huge benefit to the town of Kanturk and to the wider region.
