Ability Programme brings young people with disabiliti­es closer to the labour market

IRD Duhallow’s Ability Programme aims to bring young people with disabiliti­es between the ages of 15 to 29 who are not work-ready closer to the labour market using a range of person-centred supports.

In order to qualify for support, Ability participan­ts must be:

• in receipt of disability allowance or invalidity pension; or

• in receipt of illness benefit for more than three months; or

• referred to the project by relevant organisati­ons or services supporting young people with disabiliti­es.

• other referrals may be accepted on a case-bycase basis. Referrals from GPs and mainstream schools are not eligible.

Participan­ts on the Ability programme will be supported through personal action planning, tailored training and career guidance support.

Training will include the developmen­t of soft skills, confidence, communicat­ion, self-awareness, life-skills/personal developmen­t.

A focus will be placed on work preparatio­n including job search strategies. The young people will be supported into supported: work experience placements, work shadowing, volunteer placements and place and train schemes.
