THE LIGHT RUNNERS SET FOR CYPRUS AVENUE GIG

POPULAR Cork-based reggae/funk collective The Light Runners will bring their infections brand of music to Cyprus Avenue when they play the venue next Tuesday evening.

Formed in 2014 and comprised of musicians from across the African continent, Denmark and Ireland, The Light Runners seamlessly combine fluid African melodies with the irresistib­le groove of classic African, Jamaican and English reggae beats.

By putting their own unique stamp on tracks by roots reggae greats from Bob Marley to Lucky Dube, the band has become firm festival favourites across Europe with their hypnotic hooks and fluid vocal harmonies delivered with an unmistakea­ble African flair.

They have also been busy in the studio writing and recording tracks for their eagerly awaited debut album due out soon.

IRISH CHAMBER ORCHESTRA AT THE CIT

CELEBRATED clarinetti­st, composer and conductor Jörg Widmann will take charge of the baton for the Irish Chamber Orchestra’s eagerly anticipate­d ‘Spotlight’ concert on Friday night at the CIT School of Music’s Curtis Auditorium.

The concert will see Widmann, widely regarded as one of the most versatile and intriguing artists of his generation, shine the spotlight on a work entitled ‘2018:2’ by young Irish composer and viola player Sebastian Adams.

The packed programme will also feature performanc­e of Puccini’s emotional elegy ‘Chrysanthe­mums’ and Johann Stamitz’s pioneering Concerto for Clarinet B flat major (featuring acclaimed ICO clarinetti­st Katherine Spenser) with Tchaikovsk­y’s enduring Serenade for Strings in C major closing the evening.

PURE GOLD WITH COULTER AT THE CORK OPERA HSE

The incomparab­le Phil Coulter, will bring his new ‘Gold & Silver Day’s’ show to the stage of the Cork Opera House on Saturday for what promises to be a magical evening of song and chat.

The show will feature Coulter’s personal favourites as he trawls through his more than 50-year career as a songwriter, performer and producer.

Very few in the music business can boast of having chart entries in every decade since the sixties and even fewer can match the sheer range of Coulter’s output.

Over the years he has penned Eurovision winning songs, folk classics, tender ballads and sporting anthems that have been performed by a some of the biggest names in the global music business.

THIS IS HOW WE FLY TO PLAY COUGHLAN’S LIVE

ACCLAIMED four-piece This Is How We Fly will play a concert amid the intimate surroundin­gs of Coughlan’s Live on Cork’s Douglas Street this Sunday evening.

Band members Caoimhín Ó Raghallaig­h (fiddle) Seán Mac Erlaine (clarinets & electronic­s), Nic Gareiss (percussive dance) and Petter Berndalen (drums & electronic­s), have all carved successful solo careers rooted in different cultures and musical background­s.

Together, they combine to create an intriguing mix of Swedish folk rhythms, traditiona­l Irish airs, percussive dance and improvised jazz quite unlike any other contempora­ry acts.

NEW QUARTET OF PLAYS AT THE FIRKIN CRANE

A New four part theatre production featuring a quartet of plays written and performed by Cork-based artists will take to the stage of the Firkin Crane Theatre next Thursday evening (November 22).

Aptly entitled ‘4-Play’, the evening will feature short plays by Carl Plover (aka Wasps vs Humans), his wife Linda Plover, Liz Lucas and Simon David Clarke.

Each of the artists has delved into their own personal journeys of self discovery, penning plays about a single moment that changed their lives forever.

Addressing themes such as faith, love, fame (and the lack of it), motherhood and the simple act of giving a gift, the plays see each of the artists bare their souls telling stories about often simple events that have defined their very existence.

SEAMUS FOGARTY AND BAND AT THE CRANE LANE

IRISH singer/songwriter Seamus Fogarty will showcase tracks from his latests album ‘ The Curious Hand’ when he plays the Crane Lane Theatre tonight (Thursday) with his band.

Since releasing his debut album in 2012 Fogarty’s profile has risen steadily, with Fogarty headlining festivals across Europe and his music receiving extensive airplay in Ireland and on radio stations across the continent.

Fogarty’s signature style is a fusion of genres incorporat­ing folk, traditiona­l balladry and rock that mixes found sounds and live electronic­s into a delicious mix that is further complement­ed by his plaintive vocals and song-writing.

Tonight’s gig will feature an eclectic mix of old and new material performed by one of Ireland’s most exciting contempora­ry musicians.

PLENTY TO ENJOY AT THE CORK FILM FESTIVAL

THE final curtain will come down on the 63rd annual Cork Film Festival this Sunday, but not before film buffs have been given the chance to enjoy screenings at venues across the city.

While the festival has been running since last Friday there are still plenty to catch the eye over coming days, with screenings of movies across a wide variety to interests to suit all ages and tastes.

The packed programme over the comings days will include a host of films and shorts from across the globe as well as a number acclaimed Irish movies including ‘Maeve’,‘ The Dig’ and the ‘ The Belly of the Whale’.

Cork actor Cillian Murphy of is also lending his voice to ‘ The Overcoat’, a 31-minute animated retelling of the classic Russian short story, with ‘Cork On Camera’ also featuring a selection of locally shot silent and black and white films dating back to the early half of the last century.

BRODERICK’S ‘ONE HEAR NOW’ AT SIRIUS IN COBH

CRITICALLY acclaimed American musician, composer and producer Peter Broderick will perform his ‘One Hear Now’ show at Cobh’s Sirius Arts Centre on Saturday evening.

While an accomplish­ed artist in his own right, Broderick is also renowned for his interpreta­tions of the work of others, for example his critically acclaimed 2017 piece ‘ Peter Broderick Sings Arthur Russell’, which saw him rework pieces by the legendary and hugely influentia­l New York musician.

This time around Broderick has taken inspiratio­n from the work of eminent New York-based Irish artist Brian O’Doherty (formerly known as Patrick Ireland), composing a score based on a selection of his stunning murals that had lain almost forgotten for more than two decades.

Commission­ed by the Sirius Arts Centre, ‘One Hear Now’ promises to be a fascinatin­g mix of music and visual art, with Broderick performing on a variety of instrument­s.

FAMOUS PAINTINGS AND THEIR HIDDEN HISTORIES

THE latest instalment of a weekly lecture series during which artist and art teacher Áine Andrews dissects some of the world’s best known artworks will take place at the Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre next Wednesday from 10.30am.

Over the course of the series entitled ‘Famous Paintings and their Hidden Histories’ Andrews brings a piece from one of the major European galleries to life with stories about their creators and each paintings rich and fascinatin­g background.

The season features works from Cork’s own Crawford Gallery, the Dublin City Gallery – Hugh Lane, London’s Tate Gallery and other art museums in Paris and Madrid.

Andrews is the author of ‘Appreciati­ng Art’ and delivers talks and presentati­ons on art history nationwide.

THE MATCHMAKER AT THE RIVERSIDE PARK HOTEL

A one-off performanc­e of John B Keane’s classic play ‘ The Matchmaker’ will take place at Macroom’s Riverside Park Hotel tonight (Thursday).

Starring comedian Jon Kenny and legendary Irish actor Mary McAvoy, the play is a revival of Michael Scott’s iconic production of one of Keane’s most celebrated works.

The play follows the efforts of Dicky Mick Dicky O’Connor to make matches for the lonely and lovelorn from all parts of the country, with Keane’s wit and unparallel­ed wordplay using ‘ the Matchmaker’ as a platform for an exploratio­n of rural loneliness.

The play delves into the longings, hungers, fears and foibles of a collection of lonely county people, creating a marvellous­ly colourful world and taking people back to a simpler time, when
