Local authority development Funding windfall available for community groups
COMMUNITY groups have been issued with an invitation to share in a €3.5 million funding windfall aimed at helping them fund a wide range of capital projects within their localities.
Under the auspices of their Local Community Development Committees (LCDC’s), Cork County Council is to release the latest annual tranche of funding under its Community Development Initiative (2016-2022).
Over the course of the seven year scheme the authority allocates €500,000 per annum to the development of community orientated projects, with individual allocations ranging in size for €1,000 to €25,000.
Unlike similar schemes, each grant is 100% fully funded by the authority, with no need for matching funding from any successful applicant.
However, where a grant allocation is part funding a more expensive project, each applicant will have to give a detailed breakdown of where the shortfall will be made up from.
Cork County Council chief executive Tim Lucey urged community groups to avail of the funding, citing it as an example of the authority’s willingness to back the ongoing development of capital projects within towns and villages across Cork.
“Through our LCDC’s we are committed to improving the range and quality of community facilities that enhance the quality of life for our citizens,” said Mr Lucey.
“The initiative can be used to enhance existing facilities or to kick-start, advance or complete new projects,” he added.
The Mayor of County Cork, Cllr Gerard Patrick Murphy also urged groups and organisations to come on board with the scheme.
“This fund gives further recognition to the tremendous work and commitment shown by various organisations to their respective communities. I would encourage all groups to make sure they apply for funding,” he said.
The closing date for applications under the initiative has been set for 3pm on Friday, December 14. Successful applicants will be notified in early March of next year, with a view to having all projects completed by the end of September.
Application forms and full details of the initiative are available at www.corkcoco.ie.
