Academy pupils chase sporting success

-

ON Wednesday, November 7, the Patrician Academy U/15 footballers lost out to Causeway by a single point in the North Munster Football final.

Having won the Cork Colleges U/14 title last year, this was a first ever defeat for this exceptional group of players.

The team began their Munster campaign by defeating Mitchelstown CBS by 8-20 to 1-2. They then overcame a strong Castleisland side before comprehensively defeating Abbeyfeale in the semi final.

The panel, which was well represented by outstanding talent from all surrounding clubs, was led by a forceful midfield pairing of Sam Copps and Shane O’Connell. The team displayed fantastic defensive performances throughout the competition while Trevor Erhabor led the attack with some excellent scoring exhibitions.

Congratulations to all players and their mentors, Mr Kevin Sheehan, Ms Dara Walsh and John O’Sullivan on a great year.

Meanwhile, late last week the U/14 footballers began their Cork Colleges campaign taking on Ballincolig and Glanmire CC. Wishing them all the best for the year.

In the world of Basketball the U/16 and U/19 teams began the last week of September and are currently still underway. This year there was a change in the pool that they normally play in. The competition level was very high as the boys are competing at the highest level of the competition that can be played.

The U/16 team, who went to the All-Ireland semi-finals level last year, had something to prove and set out in the competition with intent. They were competing against teams such as Colaiste Choilm, Ballincollig Community School, St Aidans Community College and Colaiste Spioraid Naoimh. The team dealt with each game in a very confident and efficient manner and were victorious in all their games, and are currently awaiting the draw for the league quarter finals.

The U/19 team have played with passion and commitment in their games but have unfortunately not been as successful. The Academy greatly admire the sportsmanship displayed in each of their games.

The recent Run/Walk/Cycle organised by the student council was a very successful day with over €2,500 raised for various good causes. The Student Council along with Ms Glynn would like to thank all those involved in making this annual event such a success.

Meanwhile, the U/14 footballers began their county campaign with a 15-20 to 0-3 win against Ballincollig Community School. This was followed up with a 2-12 to 0-2 win against Glanmire Community College. The hard training is paying off as the Academy look to win a third county title in a row.

Twenty students embarked on a trip to Shannon airport on Thursday, November 15 for the Irish Technology Leadership Group Young Innovators competition. Competition was fierce on the day with over 700 students competing for the chance to win an all expenses paid trip to Silicon Valley.

While missing out on the main prize on this occasion the boys came up with some really innovative ideas regarding future Healthcare and the workplace of the future. Both academy teams showed great teamwork and excellent presentation skills on the day.

The current Patrician Academy Student Council is as follows: Senior Chairperson Luke Kennedy, Vice Chairperson Sean O’Sullivan, Secretary J.P. Lombard, Vice Secretary Thomas Mohally, Treasurer Kenny Dunne, Vice Treasurer Emmanuel Blayil, PROs Dominic Cronin, Billy Deane and Cormac O’Reilly, Green Reps Cormac O’Reilly, Fintan O’Keffe and Eddie Hennigan; Junior Chairperson Eddie Hennigan.
