Past season delivered success for Newmarket GAA

- JOHN TARRANT

NOTHING energises a GAA club more than the sight of silverware and Newmarket fans had plenty to cheer about during 2018 though one or two hiccups is all part of the learning curve and optimism for a new season.

A slicker Newmarket racked up an impressive tally to record their 10th Duhallow Junior A Hurling League title from Banteer in the Lismire hosting.

By the end of the hour, Newmarket grafted through a test that ultimately proved a whole lot easier than what the winners would had expected. Playing a brand of open and attacking hurling, Newmarket emerged good value for their victory and taking everything into account, they surfaced to sample the silverware and follow up on titles already won in the current decade in 2014 and 2016.

Hopes of a Junior A championship breakthrough came up short to Dromtariffe, Newmarket’s best shot wasn’t enough, all involved hoping to learn from the experience.

Meanwhile, Newmarket retained their Duhallow Junior B Hurling Championship title in the aftermath of a thrilling extra time victory over Meelin.

It’s fair to say that the traditional rivals and near neighbours ran themselves into the ground in pursuit of the spoils, the game had everything, passages of excellent hurling, brilliant scores and a pulsating finish.

There could be hardly had been a thinner line between victory and defeat, the outcome decided late in extra time when Newmarket midfielder Eddie Allen popped over the match winning point.

The winning vein continued when Newmarket offered true character to come from behind to better Kiskeam in an entertaining Duhallow Junior B Football Championship Final.

Indeed, Newmarket produced a performance brimful of commitment and resolve, not least during the closing quarter when Kiskeam made a strong bid for the laurels. Having conceded a goal, Newmarket’s response was altogether more constructive on rattling into their opponents with a courageous mix of flair and power.

Excellent scores in a competitive contest proved crucial including a goal from Newmarket full forward Robert Stack helped regain the initiative and ultimately sway the outcome.

Over the past few seasons, much development has taken place at the club grounds. This is a source of great pride to Newmarket club and community, the club has a very vibrant juvenile section. Plenty of cheer about too, Newmarket sampling success in the Rebel Og North Cork U16 Football County Championship before Newmarket added county honours when accounting for city side Raonaithe na nGael. Additionally, Newmarket landed the Rebel Óg North Cork Minor Football Championship, outright success continued for the U12 hurlers, U14 Hurling and Football teams.

And the ladies had reason to celebrate, a combination of Newmarket and Kanturk under the Abhainn Dalla banner took delight on bettering Dohenys to claim the Co. Junior Football Championship much to the delight of players, management and supporters.

An important date coming up is the AGM of Newmarket Juvenile GAA and that’s taking place on Sunday, December 2 in Newmarket GAA Clubhouse commencing at 5pm.
