LISCARROLL AC NEWS

GREAT DAY’S ACTIVITY AT CIT – Sunday last was Munster Juvenile Cross Country Relay Day at Clare Castle, Co Clare, but Liscarroll AC did not have any teams in contention as athletes took a break from competition. Instead some of our younger athletes made the trip to CIT Cork on Saturday to participate in a four club training day, courtesy of Leevale AC Those, who travelled and were treated to an afternoon of sprints, long jump, high jump, turbo javelin and hurdles were Clare Whelan, Grace Cronin, Emma O’Connell, Clodagh O’Shea, Orlaith O’Sullivan, Shona Murphy, Ella Butler, Fionn O’Sullivan, Conor Blastland, Seán Hegarty, John Butler, Jack O’Connell.

Some were making the trip to CIT for the first time. Children were shown the ropes re start line and finish line for sprints, take off for long and high jump, how to throw the turbo javelin and hurdles for the oldest of them. It was a great initiative by Leevale and the athletes who travelled benefited immensely from the time spent there. Clubs involved along with Leevale and Liscarroll were Fanahan McSweeney, Midleton and Tulla, Co Clare. This type of event is a way of introducing young athletes to a large stadium, practising their events and learning the basics.

ALL IRELAND CROSS COUNTRY – This coming Sunday 25 is the first day of the all-Ireland Juvenile Championships which takes place at Abbotstown, Co Dublin. The first race will start at 11.30 with the girls’ under-12. Three club athletes will be in action, Isobel Kellegher at under-14, Johnny Murphy also at under-14 and Anna Kellegher at under-18. All three will compete in three different categories i.e. club individual, Cork county team and Munster team, while Anna Kellegher will also be competing at junior level. We wish them the best of luck and that they will enjoy the experience.

SYMPATHY – The sympathy of the officers and members of the club is extended to Anne Murray and family of Dromina on the death of Micheál Douglas (brother) of Dromcollogher, who died last week to the Murray and Douglas family, we extend our sincerest sympathy. May he rest in peace.

ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING – Don’t forget that the club’s annual general meeting (AGM) will be held on Thursday night, November 29, at 7.45 p.m. in the community centre Liscarroll, after little athletes training.

NEW MEMBERS – Now is the time for anyone that is interested in trying out athletics, to come and visit our training sessions at Liscarroll or Charleville to see how our athletes train. There is much more to athletics than running. There is jumping, like long, high and triple, there is throwing, such as shot put, javelin, hammer and discus.
