Cloughduv and Dromtarrife eye Munster silverware

- JOHN TARRANT

SUPPORTERS from Dromtariffe and Cloughduv convene in Mallow on Sunday in search of Munster Junior A Football and Hurling Championship honours.

Over the years, both sides have endured some frustrations and to get over the line in their own county and collect prized silverware was a weight off their respective shoulders.

That enabled both Cloughduv and Dromtariffe tackle the Munster series in a positive frame of mind that has helped their advancement to the provincial show-piece. First into the fray in the hurling final are Mid Cork’s Cloughduv when they face Waterford side Ballinameela.

That’s followed by the clash of Cork champions Dromtariffe and Kerry counterparts Beaufort in the football decider.

Dromtariffe club chairman Gerard Tancred is thrilled at the rate of progress by a young team. “It’s been a long road. At the start of the year we just set out to win the Duhallow title - that was our main goal. We didn’t achieve our target, by the minimum of margins but the performance gave us great heart”, he said.

“If one told us then we were going to be in a Munster final in December we wouldn’t have known what to think of it. There was so much heartbreak when losing to Boherbue in the Duhallow replay, but that drove us on to win the county and progress in Munster,” said Gerard.

Rain or sunshine, it will do little to dampen the spirits of Dromtariffe supporters with natives expected to travel long distances for the big game.

“We’re the underdogs going into a Munster final but Dromtariffe will step onto the pitch with every hope of winning,” said an optimistic Gerard.
