- SHEILA FITZGERALD

Various community groups in Liscarroll got together recently to pay tribute to Anne Marie Bourke, who retired last June as principal of the local national school.

MC Philip Egan shared a brief history of Mrs Bourke’s time in the school. He praised her for her dedication to Liscarroll and all she had done for the community over the years.

Miriam Burton, Mary Morton and Claire Haughton made a presentation on behalf of the board of management of the school; Ger Healy made a presentation on behalf of the community council; Nigel Burton on behalf of the race committee; and Deirdre Fleming on behalf of the parents’ association.

Family members, friends and staff, along with pupils past and present, were vocal in their praise of Anne Maria’s outstanding contribution to the school over 27 years. Everyone appreciated her amazing work ethic in Liscarroll through mainstream school and Lios Cúram. Her positive attitude in all situations made Anne Marie a natural leader who never saw problems, only solutions.

New Principal Eileen Barrett, who is also a past pupil of Anne Maria’s, spoke warmly of her time in school and dedicated a poem to her and wished her well in her retirement.

Mrs Bourke in turn wished the new principal well in the years ahead, thanked everyone for making her retirement function so special, and said she was really grateful to everyone for their wonderful support during her 27 years in the school.
