Mulcahy’s is Best Established Business

- MARIA HERLIHY

WITH a smile, Donal Mulcahy said those who knew him knew that he was a man of few words. However, there was no hiding the grin as he accepted the Best Established Business Award at the sixth annual IRD Duhallow awards night.

“I am really exceptionally proud to win this award, so really and sincerely. Thank you,” said Donal Mulcahy of Mulcahy Insurances Ltd in Macroom.

While it was established over four decades ago, it was started by Brendan Mulcahy from Cullen. Their customers are generally from the County Cork region but they also deal nationwide and have clients throughout the 26 counties.

The other finalists included Waterpower, which was founded by Banteer electrician Dan Twomey 16 years ago.

Waterpower works across three tiers of business - electricity supply, electricity generation and consultancy for renewable energy projects and energy management.

Waterpower aims to be a leader in the renewable energy field and has the goal of providing 100 per cent green electricity, while they are also actively signing up with auto producers to purchase their excess electricity also.

Dan and his team of 11 employees are dedicated to the company and to its customers, and always go the extra mile for them.

Niall O’Connor Groundworks was also a finalist. He started the business 12 years ago. As noted by him, anybody building a house could employ a builder to build the house, but the client was then left to take care of driveway, kerbing, concrete yards, tarmac and landscaping themselves.

Horgan’s Pharmacy in Kanturk, which has a staff of 10, was also shortlisted. Serving people from a very wide hinterland, staff members hail from Kanturk, Newmarket, Millstreet, Banteer and Mallow with a combined service history of over 100 years.

Superintendent Pharmacist is Kieran O’Keeffe MPSI, married to Mirinda Horgan MPSI from nearby Liscarroll. Supervising Pharmacist and Branch Manager is Ger Linehan MPSI from nearby Millstreet and he is ably supported by Pharmacy Technician, Breda O’Mahony, who has over 20 years service in Horgan’s.

Other familiar and helpful Pharmacist faces include Ann Lyons MPSI, also from Millstreet.

For almost 30 years, Elizabeth O’Connell has served at the Medical Counter in Horgan’s and knows nearly every customer by name, striving to ensure they are well looked after at all times.
