‘Oliver’ will have you asking for more at Scoil Mhuire
2018 will finish on a high note at Scoil Mhuire with the upcoming staging of the musical ‘Oliver’.
The musicals first started in 1987 with ‘Joseph’. Since then, Scoil Mhuire has produced 11 other successful musicals which include Show Boat, My Fair Lady, Oklahoma, Grease and, in more recent years, Rock Star and The Sound of Music. This success has been due to the dedication and talent of all the teachers and students of Scoil Mhuire.
Some of you may remember the production of ‘Oliver’ in 1996, maybe you were even a member of the cast! The show will run for four nights: Wednesday December 12th, Thursday 13th, Friday 14th and Saturday, December 15th. Tickets are now on sale from the school office (029 50807) at a cost of €10 each. They are selling fast so book early to avoid disappointment.
There was more good news for the school recently when former student Ronan Buckley was revealed as having the top overall mark in Ireland in this year’s Leaving Certificate Higher Level Technology.
Ronan, who is currently studying Data Science and Analytics at UCC subsequently received an award at the Engineering and Technology Teachers National Annual Conference last weekend and will receive another award during the Techno Teachers Association Conference in spring of 2019.
Mr Gerald Crotty Ronan’s Technology teacher said “Ronan always had a flair for the subject and from the time he started his second level education in Scoil Mhuire he excelled in the subject. He had a unique and a very creative way of tackling design issues. He is a very innovative student and was always a pleasure to teach and I am sure he will continue his excellent work in Third Level Education and beyond”, Gerald said.
As part of his Leaving Certificate Technology examination Ronan had to design and manufacture a food related project supported by a design portfolio. Ronan’s project was based on an intelligent and automated Sushi Bar. The project was designed on a computer aided drawing software package called Solidworks and this allowed parts of the project to be manufactured using 3D Printing and Laser Cutting Technologies. The project is controlled using a programmable circuit board which was programmed by Ronan.
The project displays different Sushi dishes and when a customer selects a dish from the rotating display unit it is automatically weighed which will then show the customer the price.
Ms Miriam Downey Principal at Scoil Mhuire said that Ronan’s achievement is a great honour for himself, for his teacher Mr Crotty and for Scoil Mhuire. “We in the school community are very proud of Ronan and we wish him well in his future studies.” Miriam said.
