St Mary’s students celebrate Irish language

- By DANIELLA MOREY & CIARA O’ DONOVAN

THE TY students of St Mary’s, Macroom, recently took part in a culture filled day in our school to celebrate the Irish language.

Here we improved our skills in speaking our native language and got an insight into what it would be like to speak it on a daily basis. We all found this a challenge but worth it as we learned a vast number of important phrases and more about our culture.

Our Irish teachers, Mr Quill and Ms Quelly, helped us with the activities and insured the Irish kept flowing throughout the day!

Activities for the day included a breakfast in the morning to prepare us for the busy events that followed. We then proceeded to play games such as ‘ Twister’ where all instructions were given in Irish. We also learned traditional Irish and set dances and once again all instructions were given ‘as gaeilge’. After this an Irish quiz was handed out followed by the watching of the Irish show ‘Aifric’. The entire year was also given T-shirts and wristbands representing the annual ‘Speak Gaeilge for a Day’ initiative.

Gaeilge 24 was carried out all over Ireland throughout this year and we thoroughly enjoyed being a part of it. This yearly event shows the importance of the Irish language and how it should be appreciated by the younger generations; without it we would be forgetting our culture and who we are.

The ‘Speak Irish for a Day’ programme aims to teach the current youth the importance of the history of the language and the benefit it has for our future. #Gaeilge24
