High achieving local students honoured at Cork ETB awards
‘EVERY ONE OF THESE STUDENTS SHOULD HOLD THEIR HEADS HIGH’
HIGH flying students from second-level schools across north and mid- Cork have been honoured for their hard work and outstanding results in their Leaving Cert and Leaving Cert Applied (LCA) exams.
Medals and certificates of commendation were handed out to almost 100 students by the Cork Education and Training Board (CETB) during a special awards ceremony held at the Radisson Blu Hotel and Spa, Little Island.
Each of the schools and colleges also identified one standout student – who not only reached their academic potential, but also gave outstanding commitment to their school community – with prestigious Student of the Year awards.
Top achievers included Matthew McGlynn from Davis College in Mallow, Seosamh Ó Buachalla from Coláiste Ghobnatan in Ballymakeera and Márie O’Keeffe from Coláiste Choilm in Ballincollig, each of whom achieved an impressive 625 points in last summer’s leaving certificate exams - the maximum possible.
The awards ceremony was attended by CETB representatives, proud parents and staff from the represented schools, with music by the trio of Adel Murphy, Louise Clarke and Orla Gleeson from the Cork School of Music providing the ideal accompaniment to proceedings.
Speaking on the day CETB acting chief executive John Fitzgibbons praised all of the award recipients for their diligence and dedication over the years leading up to their exams.
He also acknowledged the support of parents, guardians and staff in assisting the students in achieving their ambitions.
“Every year, the CETB Awards act as a wonderful platform for these fantastic students to showcase just how hard they have worked and the extraordinary results that have followed such dedication. Not only is it important for us to honour students in this way and to shine a spotlight on their efforts and achievements, but it is also our duty to do so for the students that will follow in their footsteps, as it highlights what can be accomplished when you are willing to put in the time and hard word,” he said.
“Each and every one of these students should hold their heads high; what a positive start this is to the next phase of their lives,” said Mr Fitzgibbons.
