Fiddler Caoimhe flying the musical flag for the Rebels

A HUGELY talented Rockchapel musician will be the only Rebel competitor in the final for the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal competitio­n.

Caoimhe Flannery (17) is a talented fiddle player with a number of All-Ireland titles to her name. Caoimhe is taught by renowned fiddler Matt Cranitch, and is a fine exponent of Sliabh Luachra music.

She stems from a talented musical family, and her younger sister, Eimhear, competed in the Seán Ó Riada Gold Medal final last year, on concertina, and in 2016 on whistle.

The final will take place at the Rochestown Park Hotel this Friday and the it will be broadcast live on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta

.There will be 17 fiddlers in total taking to the stage for the final, including a brother and sister from Waterford and three musicians flying in from the USA. The winner will take home a gold medal, designed by the late Cashel Goldsmith Pádraig Mac Mathúna, and a cash prize of €2,500.

The final on Friday will be presented live by Peadar Ó Riada at 7 pm on his radio programme Cuireadh chun Ceoil on RTÉ Raidió na Gaeltachta and will also be streamed live to the RnaG Facebook page.

On Saturday night, the Coirm Órdha concert of previous winners of the medal will take place in the hotel which will include pipers Tiarnán Ó Duinnchinn and Éanna Ó Cróinín, flute player Tim McHugh, harpers Oisín Morrison and Úna Ní Fhlannagái­n, and last year’s winner, Tipperary box player Keelan McGrath.
