Rapunzel lets down her hair in Rathmore

-

ENTERTAINING audiences for more than three decades and raising proceeds for worthy causes, the Rathmore-based Marian Players concludes this weekend with their annual panto and the 2019 presentation of Rapunzel.

Those associated with the 32nd production are maintaining a long and valued theatrical tradition from the Sliabh Luachra Region of Northwest Cork and East Kerry.

The advice for patrons is hold onto your hats and prepare for a magical take of this classic fairy tale, one that’s packed with songs, comedy and lots of audience participation.

Musical Director Mary Dilworth from Knocknagree promises dollops of magic and mayhem, adding to the traditional pantomime wonder associated with this panto group, which features a key Duhallow involvement.

“The main ingredients are the wealth of local talent who will be presenting a show which is stuffed with comedy, where all concerned embark on numerous twists and turns,” said Mary.

“This year’s theme is the classic fairtytale Rapunzel, and the story follows her as she tries to escape from the tower and the clutches of her wicked stepmother”, she said.

The cast includes many familiar faces in addition to new talent from East Kerry and Western Duhallow.

The lead role, Princess Rapunzel, is played by Jayme Linehan from Millstreet, and her brother, Conor, plays Frankie.

The Dame is Brian Hickey; the Prince is Shane Dillane, and Mary Hickey fills the witch roles.

Key parts are also played by Meadbh Dennehy, Pavel Swiz, Mike Cronin, Kevin O’Riordan, Jimmy Kelly (King), Carmel O’Keeffe (Queen), Derry Healy (Captain), Nora Coakley, Matt O’Riordan and Katelynn O’Keeffe.

A large chorus adds to the enjoyment of the production, and the enthusiastic cast is supported by young boys and girls drawn from local national schools. Other established faces crossing the county bounds are Tim O’Donoughue (Knocknagree), Margaret Dennehy (Millstreet), Denis O’Shea (Derinagree), Jim O’Sullivan (Rathcoole), Siobhain McSweeney, David O’Connor (Knocknagree) and many more.

Show dates for the Rathmore panto are today, January 31 (7.30pm); Saturday, February 2 (7.30pm); and Sunday, Febuary 3 (3pm).

All proceeds from this year’s Panto go to Kerry Parents and Friends. For more information or to arrange booking, contact (085) 135 1810.
