Basil’s thunderbolt wins top Fermoy award

- BILL BROWNE

MEMBERS of the Fermoy Camera Club looked to the heavens with predictably impressive results for their first monthly competition of 2019.

Titled ‘ The Sky’s the Limit’, the colour-printed competition attracted almost 30 entries, with club PRO Helen Arnold saying the four-person team of internal judges had a tough task in picking the winners.

“The competition title gave members plenty of scope to test their imaginations, and they did not disappoint, producing some stunning images,” said Helen.

Basil O’Sullivan scooped the overall prize with his breathtaking image of a lightning-filled sky over Tuscany. Second was Bill Chambers with his panoramic photograph of Knockananig Reservoir near Fermoy, with Karen Fleming’s moody black-and-white photograph ‘Sky Over Garrylucas’ taking third place.

Catherine Spillane’s seafront scene, taken during the club visit to Nerja in Spain last year, won the grade-two prize, with the grade-three award going to Sheena Hanrahan for her beautiful shot taken on the Beara Peninsula.

“The competition gave us a great opportunity to see each image close up during the table critique, and it was great to get such positive feedback from our colleagues,” said Helen.

“For our February ‘Your Choice’ competition, members can enter their favourite photo of any subject, taken any time and anywhere, so it should be another well-contested event,” she added.

Meanwhile, club members hit the New Year running, with medals for both Jim Heffernan and Donagh Cronin at the Southern Regional Finals of the ‘Nature and Wildlife’ competition, and Emer Quigley receiving her Salon acceptance.
