KILLAVULLEN GAA

PRESENTATION OF DIVISION two MEDALS – Last Saturday night, In Magners bar, a very fine crowd assembled for the presentation of the 2018 Avondhu Division 2 hurling medals to each of the 27 players, who had participated in the leagues. A squad of that size was very necessary in the year, due to the plethora of injuries that the team encountered throughout the year, but it was testament to their resolve that they won out in the end.

The medals were presented by Brid O’Sullivan, Captain of the all-Ireland Senior ladies’ football team of Mourne Abbey, and Brid was accompanied by her winning colleagues, Rebecca Larkin and Ava Lankford. The famous Clyda win contained two other girls from Killavullen, Katherine Coakley and Emma Coakley, who were unavailable on the night.

Brid gave a very fine speech on the night, about the importance of dedication and training and perseverance and thanked those in Killavullen, who introduced her to Gaelic Football, when she started off playing with the boys in under-12 grades, before Killavullen had any girls’ teams. Listening on, John Hartnett and his management team of Barry Murphy, Tommy Cremin and John Brennan would certainly endorse all that Brid asked of her teammates and to use setbacks as a catalyst to future success.

With siblings in the group accepted the medals, it was always a very jolly and jovial occasion. Barry Murphy as manager of the hurling team gave a brief speech in which he emphasised that strong role that new players into the fold, from the juvenile ranks played in the success and also stressed that no one can afford to rest on their laurels, with a very fine bunch of players again pressing for inclusion in the team for 2019.

The 27 medals recipients were as follows: Michael Cronin, Billy Norris, Kevin Fox, Stephen Rice, Seán O’Regan, Séamus Fox, Pa Egan, Patrick Angland, Jack O’Connor, Paul O’Sullivan, Alex Notter, Eddie Cotter, Michael Fresh, Barry Murphy, Charlie Lillis, Pa Sheehan, Liam Cronin, Cian Lankford, Pádraig Looney, Pa Cronin, Ian O’Gorman, Tadgh Moakley, Eoghan Buckley, Seán Woulfe, Garry Lane, James Fitzpatrick, Barthly Hayes.

RESUMPTION OF FOOTBALL LEAGUES – The Avondhu football leagues are due to resume this year on the weekend starting February 8. Killavullen will be playing in Division 1 football this year, but did not enter team in Division 3. The minor football leagues are scheduled to start on February 16.

As the weather at this time of the year can play havoc with fixtures, it is always wise to consult with our website, closer to the date for confirmation.

LOTTO – The lotto of a cool €1,400 last Tuesday night was not won, and rolls on. Numbers drawn were 5, 16 and 32 – No Winner. The lucky-dip winners were as follows: €50 Ann Looney Bohan – Seller John Beechinor; €30 Kieran Walsh – Seller – John Angland; €30 Caitriona Carey – Seller Magners Bar. The next draw will be in Magners Bar.

CAVANAGH’S CAR DRAW – Killavullen GAA Club, has now got tickets for sale for sale, with the first prize being a Ford Fiesta, second and third prizes are €1,000 and prizes from fourth to 18th place being €250. This draw is as a result of winning the afore mentioned Avondhu Division 2 hurling league in 2018.

In addition to these excellent prizes, the money raised from the sale of tickets in Killavullen will go to fund numerous short, medium and long term projects. These projects cannot be achieved without the support of the general public, in our parish and beyond.

WHERE DOES YOUR MONEY GO? Capital Projects – Killavullen GAA has recently applied for planning permission for new dressing rooms and a general purpose room ancillary to our existing facilities. We have over 40 teams sharing our facilities at the moment so the extra space will be greatly appreciated. This project alone will cost approximately €200,000 and we are hopeful of receiving a grant of €150,000. We have plan on installing outdoor exercise equipment near the astroturf. This type of equipment is beneficial to all ages and we hope will be of benefit to the entire community.

Team Projects – In 2018 Killavullen GAA embarked on its Long Term Development Plan. In short this plan concentrates on improving fundamental movement and flexibility in the younger ages while developing athleticism and a healthy way of life as our children grow through the club.

We have earmarked a number of projects to help achieve this for the winter: Fundamental Movement (Off Season); Gymnastics (Off Season); Basketball (Off Season); Age appropriate Strength and Conditioning (All Year); Guest Coaches to learn from the best; Nutrition; Club Tours.

These initiatives are being run in conjunction with hundreds of games and thousands of training sessions given throughout the year on a voluntary basis.

Of course none of this can be achieved without your support, we ask you to make as big an effort as you can to sell these tickets to your neighbours, uncles, aunts, cousins, mothers, fathers, colleagues and even strangers.

MEMBERSHIP 2019 – Membership for all aspects of the club is now due for 2019, and the club would be gracious if persons will pay the appropriate fee to any committee member, or make arrangement to pay directly, to the membership officer John O’Donovan, at 086 3934232.

Juvenile membership is collected through the juvenile registration process and the players pay their membership to the team managers.

For the general public, the rates for 2018 are as follows. Full Adult membership – Working – €50. Student/OAP – €30.
