Muintir Uibh Laoire and St John’s celebrate a successful 2018
SAINT John’s GAA had reason to celebrate at a victory function hosted in the Castle Hotel, Macroom.
The occasion was special for the Duhallow club who were acknowledging a number of outstanding successes at both divisional and county levels, confirmed with silverware on the top table and acknowledged by a large attendance.
The highlight of the season was a win in the County Junior B Football League, where a dedicated side erased the disappointment of narrow defeats over recent seasons to land a historic first time title from Kilmurry.
At domestic level in Duhallow, St. Johns dominated to complete a league and championship double, Duhallow Junior Board Chairman Joe Kerins on hand to congratulate St John’s on a rewarding past season.
On teh celebration night the club took the opportunity to salute the efforts of those on and off the field - Player of the Year belonged to the consistent Eoin Barrett; Most Improved Player: Brian Kelleher and Most Committed Player: Shane Kelleher.
No surprise surrounded the Club Person of the Year with football coach Jimmy Murphy accepting the accolade. In doing do, Jimmy was honoured for his tireless contribution to a run of successes, ensuring all through a long season - his charges were sharp, enthusiastic and utterly focused in maintaining a winning run.
St John’s GAA is one of Cork’s youngest clubs, after adding its entry to the Duhallow GAA fraternity at the turn of the current decade.
The St. Johns club takes its name from a landmark well known in the Aubane area, close to the ancient Butter Road, and the club have a good reason to look forward with a buzz of excited anticipation.
The newly formed combination took to the field for the first time in March 2010 away to Meelin in a league fixture and from the outset made positive strides. Their efforts were eventually rewarded with success in Duhallow and last year’s county title sees St John’s step up to a brave new era.
Meanwhile, the club has not been short of ingenuity when it comes to fund-raising - these have ranged from poker classics, to the Monster MAC triathlon to one of the largest ever events hosted by a Cork club.
All the best of home and foreign shearers and wool handlers flexed muscles at the 2013 All Ireland and International Sheep Shearing and Wool Handling Championships, which was welcomed by the fledgling St. John’s GAA to Millstreet’s Green Glens Complex, for the first time in 31 years.
