Passing of local legend Jimmy ‘Ska’ Scanlon

-

HUNDREDS of moving tributes were received on social media over the weekend following the death of legendary musician and singer, and former goalkeeping great, Jimmy Ska Scanlon at his home at Newtwopothouse early on Saturday morning.

Formerly of Croke Place and Woodview Drive, Jimmy, who was a plumber by trade, epitomized all that is popular in a human being as he was so well known and admired by people, young and old and from all walks of life from far and near.

The spotlight first fell on Jimmy in the 1960s when he joined his brother, John, and played in the hugely popular Toastal Band who were fronted by Denny Sheehan. After the break up of the Toastal, Jimmy formed his own band, The Waltons with brother John and the late Peter O’Riordan on drums. At this stage the trio became well booked for many social events and weddings.

Phase three in his life in music arrived with the formation of the Silverglades with John Scanlon, the late Dave Scully and Anthony Scanlan with Jimbo Griffin and Kevin Horgan, who were also part of the line up at varying stages. When his brother John decided to retire from music Jimmy set up the Ska’s with Anthony Scanlan, Kevin Horgan and Liam Evans.

At the outset of his life in music Jimmy played bass guitar but switched over to rhythm guitar later. Jimmy was a powerful singer and he also featured on the Rakes Of Mallow recordings, which included many local musicians and singers.

In the world of sport Jimmy left his mark in soccer as a goalkeeper. He played with Mallow United, Boher Celtic and the Cork City side St. Mary’s during his playing career. His cat-like performance as a goal minder was renowned and admired by opposing strikers from all teams in the region, and his hair band keeping his then long hair controlled was very much part of the man in all games.

During his spectacular career he was a junior international in 1978 and was part of the Cork AUL Oscar Traynor team in 1973-1974, 1976- 977 and 1978-1979.
