Pop-up museum initiative

-

THE members of Charleville Heritage Society are organising a pop-up museum for display at the forthcoming Charleville Agricultural Show, as their contribution to the 40th anniversary of the foundation of the Show.

They are presently organising story boards of the various historical figures either born in or closely associated with the town. These include the town’s founder, Roger Boyle, who was also known, infamously so, as Lord Broghill, Archbishop Daniel Mannix of Melbourne, Archbishop Thomas W. Croke of Cashel, Bishop Robert Browne of Cloyne, poets Sean Clarach Mac Domhnaill and John Anster, Eliza Lynch, Eamon de Valera, Daniel Binchy and Mother Joseph Croke.

There will also be story boards on the town’s churches, and one tracing the progress of education of the town from the establishment of the Endowed School by Roger Boyle to the advent of Mercy Sisters and Irish Christian Brothers and other schools to the town.

The Society would welcome sponsorship from any local company, which would be acknowledged on the display.

The organisers are presently looking for small items of local historical importance to display in the pop-up museum, which would be returned after the weekend. They are also looking for suitable premises, preferably on Main Street, to mount a permanent display of the historical items, which they have collected to date.

As the society is made up of voluntary members they do not possess the necessary finance to rent any premises, and any such building would have to be donated free of charge.
