Kilshannig see off Clyda to clinch hurling league title

KILSHANNIG took their first Division One hurling title at Mallow when they overcame their neighbours and great rivals Clyda Rovers by a 10-point margin.

Exchanges were very close in the opening 12 minutes when the sides were level at 0-1, 0-2 and 0-3 each. Kilshannig gained the upperhand. Their defence were very solid with Bill Curtin, Brian Guerin, Conor Murphy, Eoghan Burke, Roddy O’Mahony and David Cronin outstandin­g. They held Clyda scoreless for the rest of the half. In this period Kilshannig had some very good scores. Jack Kearney and Kevin O’Flynn had points that had the winners 0-11 to 0-3 ahead at the interval.

On the resumption good play by Jack Twomey led to another Kevin O’Flynn point. Niall Hanley replied for Clyda. Impressive Jack Kearney soloed through and struck a great point. Eoin O’Sullivan and Seamus Ronayne exchanged a point as Kilshannig moved 0-13 to 0-5 clear. Clyda Rovers never gave up they tried very hard for a goal to get back in contention. John Quinn was very solid in goal and the backs curtailed many Clyda attacks. Darragh Buckley soloed through the heart of the Kilshannig defence but a timely intercepti­on by Bill Curtin broke up the attack and the ball was cleared to Kevin O’Flynn who pointed for the winners at the end of the third quarter 0-14 to 0-5.

A foul on Barry O’Shea led to a pointed free by Kevin O’Flynn as the winners moved 10 points clear 0-15 to 0-5. Seamus Ronayne pointed a close in free and followed from play 0-15 to 0-7. Roy Willis cut the lead to 7 points after 53 minutes. Kilshannig finished very strong. Good play by Dermot Twomey to Kevin O’Flynn led to a fine Barry O’Shea point. Good play by Colm O Shea led to another Kevin O’Flynn point 0-18 to 0-8. Kevin O’Flynn completed the winners tally in the 60th minute. In injury time Seamus Ronayne pointed a Clyda free that was followed by the final whistle. After the game Barry Aherne Chairman North Cork Board presented the Cavanagh’s Fermoy sponsored cup to the joint captains Eoghan Burke and Barry O’Hanlon. Kevin O’ Flynn was named man of the match.
