Teagasc at Munster Maths & Science Fair in Mallow

-

TEAGASC will be participating in the 9th Annual Munster Maths and Science Family Fair, being held at Mallow GAA Complex, Carrigoon on October 13 from 11am.

Richard Walsh and John Casey, Teagasc foresters, will be displaying a new 3-D farm forestry model illustrating the various roles that trees and forestry can contribute to an Irish farm. The model emphasises the importance of whole farm planning, highlighting how a well-planned forest resource may contribute from an economic, environmental and social perspective.

The contribution of trees ranges from commercial Sitka spruce growing on more marginal land, native woodland and agroforestry plots, to the ‘Woodland for Water’ measure providing valuable wooded habitats along rivers.

Kieran Murphy from LAWCO will be there to discuss how the Agricultural Sustainability Support and Advisory Programme (ASSAP) works with farmers to help improve water quality, with a “kick sample” to demonstrate how water quality can affect life in our shared water bodies.

Keelin O’Driscoll and Anne Marie McAuliffe will also attend to chat about the dairy, pig and food research that is carried out at Teagasc Moorepark.

VistaMilk SFI Research Centre will be on site to answer all your questions with regards to #digitalisingdairy. Centre staff and researchers will describe their work using a scaled down model of the farm of the future built entirely of Lego.
