TOMMY FLEMING AT THE VILLAGE ARTS CENTRE

ACCLAIMED Irish singer Tommy Fleming will play concerts at Village Arts Centre in Kilworth on Friday and Saturday night.

A Tommy Fleming concert is a musical experience not to be missed with one song more haunting than the other. His easy going style and stunning voice has universal appeal to all ages and background­s, earning him an ever expanding fan-base.

JAKE CLEMONS TO PLAY DE BARRA’S IN CLON

SINGER, songwriter and multi-instrument­alist Jake Clemons will make a welcome return to Cork next Thursday night (October 17) for an intimate gig De Barra’s Folk Club in Clonakilty.

Clemons divides his time between touring the world, performing his own music and spending the last seven-years as the tenor and baritone saxophonis­t with Bruce Springstee­n’s E Street Band, replacing his late uncle Clarence Clemons.

Earlier this year he released the single ‘Democracy’, his interpreta­tion of the Leonard Cohen classic, ahead of the release of his highly anticipate­d album, Eyes On the Horizon’, which also spawned the single ‘Consumptio­n Town’.

The De Barra’s gig will see Clemons perform tracks from the new album as well as numbers from his back catalogue.

HUDSON TAYLOR LINED UP FOR CYPRUS AVENUE GIG

FOLLOWING a string of tour dates in the US, Irish duo Hudson Taylor will return Cork on Sunday evening for a gig amid the intimate surroundin­gs of Cork’s Cyprus Avenue.

Brothers Alfie and Harry Hudson-Taylor cut their teeth busking on the streets of the capital prior to releasing their top ten selling debut album ‘Singing for Strangers’ in 2015.

Their acoustic, folky sound and close vocal harmonies, often compared to Simon & Garfunkel and Bob Dylan, has seen them become regular festival favourites.

The siblings also bring a love of contempora­ry pop to their music, giving it a more modern feel, with their clever, mature and sometimes dark lyrics.

TOM CREAN’S INCREDIBLE STORY AT THE EVERYMAN

THE smash hit show ‘ Tom Crean – Antarctic Explorer’ will run for three nightly performanc­es at the Everyman Palace Theatre from next Monday evening.

The uplifting one-man show as been playing to full houses for more than a decade, transporti­ng audiences to Crean’s Antarctic, reliving his exploits as one of the few men to serve with both Scott and Shackleton and survive three famous expedition­s

Written and performed by Aidan Dooley the dramatic and humorous solo show brings to life one of the great characters and unsung heroes of the golden age of polar exploratio­n.

Awarded ‘Best Solo Show’ following its première at the 2003 New York Internatio­nal Festival it is a vivid, surprising­ly funny account of sheer heroism in the face of impossible odds.

THE WATERMELON­S AT THE CRANE LANE

CORK-based blues four piece The Watermelon­s will play a free late night gig at the Crane Lane Theatre on Cork City on Sunday night.

With a line up, consisting of drums, bass, guitar and sax, the band boasts some of Corks finest musicians.

Their live sets alternate between pure Chicago blues and blues rock, with blistering covers of tracks made famous by legendary musical figures including Muddy Waters, Howlin’ Wolf, The Allman Brothers, Junior Wells, Fleetwood Mac and Jimi Hendrix.

The audience can expect wailing guitars and sax solos driven by a stirring vocals and a formidable rhythm section delivered with brash enthusiasm.

TRAD LEGENDS SCULLION AT THE WHITE HORSE

VETERAN Irish band Scullion will play a concert ‘Upstairs’ at the White Horse in Ballincoll­ig on Friday evening.

Sonny Condell, Greg Boland and Philip King formed Scullion in the mid-70’s, releasing seven critically acclaimed studio albums of Irish folk/ rock and becoming one of the most sought after acts on the live music scene.

Following a break Scullion reformed in 2008 releasing their ‘Long Wave’ album featuring brand new material and rekindling the flame that had made them one of the country’s favourite folk outfits.

Drawing from their incredible repertoire of songs spanning four decades, Scullion remain as relevant today as they did when they first came together.

MICHAEL ENGLISH AND HIS ‘SUPERBAND’ IN CORK

One of the darlings of the Irish country music scene, Michael English will bring his latest Irish tour to the stage of the Cork Opera House tonight (Thursday) with his ‘Superband’ in tow.

Currently packing out venues across the country Michael and his talented band are renowned for their energetic performanc­es and Michel’s superb piano playing.

ALL TVVINS TO BRING IRISH TOUR TO THE INEC

HAVING played Indiepende­nce and supported The Coronas at Irish Independen­t Park this summer, All Tvvins will play the INEC Acoustic Club in Killarney on Friday night.

The duo of Conor Adams and Lar Kaye enjoyed a phenomenal start to their career, with their 2016 debut album ‘IIVV’ reaching number two in the Irish charts, earning a Choice Music Prize nomination for Album of the Year and smashed the 15 million streams mark.

Eager to build on that success they dropped three new tracks. ‘Alone Together’,’ Anything’ and ‘Crash’, in quick succession as well as cementing their reputation as live performers with gigs across Ireland and the UK.

INVITATION TO JOIN DAVID GERAGHTY ‘IN THE PINES’

IRISH multi-instrument­alist and songwriter David Geraghty will being his ‘Join Me in the Pine’s’ project to Coughlan’s Live in Cork City on Friday week (October 18).

Best known as the driving force behind the band Bell X1, Gereghty has also enjoyed a hugely successful solo career releasing his debut album ‘Kill Your Darlings’ in 2007, following this up in 2009 with the equally evocative ‘ The Victory Dance’ and the 2014 LP ‘Inherit’ under his ‘Join Me in the Pine’s’ project

Last year saw Geraghty moving away from the dark brooding style of his previous work, instead introducin­g new and more uplifting music inspired by Prince, Bowie and Nile Rogers into his live sets.

He will be joined on stage by Marc Aubele (keys and vocals), Mick Major (bass and vocals) and Tim O Donovan (drums and vocals).

LIR QUARTET TO PLAY TRISKEL AUTUMN SERIES

THE acclaimed Lir Quartet will deliver a lunchtime recital at the Triskel Christchur­ch Arts Centre on Saturday as part of the venues Autumn series of concerts.

The Lir Quartet is comprised of four of Ireland’s finest young musicians, Siun Milne ( Violin), Siobhan Doyle (violin) , Ed Creedon (viola) and Chris Ellis (cello) who are based between France, Germany and Ireland, and individual­ly enjoy busy careers as soloists, chamber musicians and orchestral players.

All four members have previously been prize winners at the Clandeboye Festival ‘Young Musicians’ Platform and this year were invited back to the festival to perform quartets by Ravel, Debussy and Faure.

Saturday’s repertoire will feature Schubert’s String Quartet in E flat major (D.87) and Shostakovi­chs String Quartet No. 3 in F major OP.73.
